I will be taking rugby shots this afternoon and using my 100-400L on a monopod for the first time. Should I switch the IS off when using on a monopod, or leavie it switched to position 2?

TIA

I'm fairly sure your better off leaving it on as you will still get vibration on a monopod. You only need to switch it off if you can lock it solid on a tripod etc.

I tend to leave mine on mode 1 but havnt played about with mode 2 that much.

With Canon you do not need to ever turn it off apart from saving battery its a very clever IS on there lens
