I'm looking at selling my 1000d and Sigma 70-300mm lens and possibly buying a 2nd hand 40d.

Is this a reasonable upgrade?

I dont really want to put THAT much money towards it.

What am I getting when I upgrade, apart from a better build?

Is there anything else I should consider? Maybe Nikon?

I have a canon 50mm, the 18-55mm kit lens and a 430ex... which I'm guessing I cant use with Nikon.

Thanks.

Not at all, if you think you've made the most of your 1000D and you're happy with the feel of a 40D then you go for it mate

Its a good upgrade. You're getting a lot more features, and the camera is a much nicer thing to use.

Your other accessories will work fine with the 40D, but couldn't be used on anything other than a Canon EOS camera.

Can you manage without a 70-300mm lens though?

To be honest, I put a post up a few weeks ago after a visit to Chester Zoo... I just dont like the lens...

Much of my photography is / and will be around the portrait scene, so the 70-300 is pretty much useless to me... I'd love a 10-22/20mm for a bit of creativity and also a sigma 30mm f/1.4... as well as my current 50mm etc...

What do you think is a fair price for my cam / lens?

The cam was purchased from John Lewis in January 2009, and the lens from Camulet in Dec 2009. Everything is boxed etc.
