this may or may not be a problem, when i was using it over the weekend, i noticed if i went from close up, to distant, the af wouldn't work until i manually turned the focus ring, is this normal?, im thinking it might be because of the vast change of distance, any advice appreciated, or some guides to getting the best out of the lens too wouldn't go a miss, thanks in advance
 
How do you have the focus limiter switch set? I find it can be reluctant to make long focus changes on the FULL setting. I've never considered it a problem, just one of those things.
 
the switch on the side?, i think it was on full, thanks for that, just checking its not the lens as Ive only just bought it
 
It's a quirk of the 100L that it won't move out to infinity from close up without a bit of manual intervention.....nothing to worry about.

At the extreme like this, where the lens is close focussed, and you are shooting something far away, the image is so blurred that the lens doesn't know which way to go in order to achieve focus. Once you get to the point where it can discern an improvement/worsening as it tries to achieve focus, it's good to go, but it can require manual intervention to get it to that point.
 
Mine does the same on a few occasions but not all the time. Check the camera settings to see if you have it set to hunt for focus under 'Lens drive when AF impossible'. It can be set to search or stop and if it's set to stop that could be your problem.
