I'm considering buying this lens but thought I should check here to see if there's any potential downside to using it on a crop body.

I do use one other full frame lens without issue, but cannot decide if working at close range to subject matter may cause issue's I hav'nt thought about.

Grateful for any advice.

I assume it's for macro work? At 1:1 the focus distance will be the same regardless of which body is used. The crop factor will just make it "seem like" the image was taken at 1.5:1. Of course, at the higher "apparent magnification" camera shake will be more of an issue; but it's not something I would worry about.
 
I've used my 105 macro on my old D300, then the D7100 and now my new D7200. It's been a stellar performer on all of them, and allows a bit more working distance for skittish bugs more so than using it on my D810 or D750, where you have to get that little bit closer.
 
Presumably the magnification of 1.5:1 is at MFD only ? Meant to add, I have this lens and it works great on my D7200 so I suspect will yield similar images on your D7100.

Not quite. It's just that the area of the subject that can be shot at 1:1 will be smaller, so the maximum subject size will be 23.5mm x 15.6mm rather than 35.9mm x 24mm. What a crop body will allow over an FF one with the lens is extra working distance while still filling the frame.
At 1:1, VR is all but useless, so either use a tripod or a higher shutter speed.

I said it will "seem like" 1.5:1, and yes it will be at MFD only. Or you can get an "apparent 1:1" from a longer working distance with more DOF (handy).

The crop factor is just like any other form of cropping... and the size of the image will be determined by what is left. I use a 150/2.8 macro on a Nikon 1 V2. It is still recording 1:1 at MFD, but it "looks like" 2.7:1 on a 14MP FF sensor.

You've raised a couple of issues I had not considered but in the process convinced me to give it a go . Cant see the bank manager being best pleased.
