105mm Filter - which one mainly just to protect the lens

Considering buying a filter for a Sigma 150-600mm Sports lens, which I believe is 105mm size. Does anyone have any recommedations for one which will be ok throughout the zoom range?

Though I usually go for a UV filter.I was thinking about the Sigma 105mm Protector filter as it is about £40 cheaper than the Sigma UV filter.
Are there any cheaper filters worth trying?

Do you really need one?
The best protection is a hood, and it doesn't affect the image - except in a positive way.

I agree with you, but I find cleaning a filter less "stressful" than cleaning the front element of a lens!

I shoot a lot of animals and pets and use the Hoya HD Protector filters.
Wet noses and muddy paws don't mix with lens front elements.
