Hi All,

I'm currently shooting point to point races with a sigma 120-300 f2.8 but I am finding it a bit of a beast to lug around.
I'm also finding that I miss the 70-120 range for indoor work and shooting closer range sports such as kayaking and mountain biking.

I am toying with switching to the sigma 70-200 f2.8 with a 1.4x converter.

My opinion is that the 1-stop loss should outweigh the benefits I could gain from weight loss and the 70mm end, but can anyone else share their opinions?

You have also got to consider that the AF will be slowed by the extender, which could be a problem for sports photography.

Ah now that I had not considered.
The 120-300 is the older version so I'm not sure if it would be that noticeable?

ive got all of the lenses and combos you mention..

120-300 is better than 70-200 + 1.4 any day of the week, even the non-DG version of the 120-300.

I hope you're right.... I've just upgraded to the 120-300! How do you find it with the 1.4x teleconverter?

I agree with that 100% and it seems to cope with the 2x very well also! (providing its kept very steady)

Thanks for the info chaps, I'll probably stick with the 120-300 and just hit the gym :-D

If you've got the older 120-300, have you upgraded the collar to the TS-41 model so you can use it as a handle? I've got a non-DG version that I did this to, and it makes far more easier to carry for long periods

Op - don't want to hijack the thread but............ which 1.4x are people using - Canon or Sigma ?

Ive got the non DG 1.4 and a DG 2x both work well.
