To clarify the metal/plastic thing.
All canon camera have a metal body mount, but here's the catch.
The 1000D has 3 plastic flanges on the inside diameter that the lens locks onto.
More advanced cameras have these flanges made of metal which I guess is the difference being described by travellingcello.

That aside I had a 1000D and never had any issues with the body mount and I changed lenses copious times!
So either travellingcello got a duff body or was mabye a little to heavy handed in changing lenses.
