Yes
I have just upgraded to a D700 and have been looking at getting hold of a 16-35mm Nikon for wide angle shots.
The only trouble is it is currently a bit out of my budget so does anyone recommend any cheaper alternatives or should I hang on and wait to get the nikon lens?

Try the Tamron 17-35 f2.8-4. They've been going for £150-200 on Ebay lately and the performance far exceeds the 2nd hand price.

The Tokina 17-35mm f/4 is well reguarded to and I'd imagine a bit tougher than the Tamron.

As to whether you should hang on I'd guess the Nikon 16-35mm would perform better(and of course offer VR) but perhaps not THAT much better on a D700 where the lenses don't have to work as hard.

Keep saving and get a used 14-24mm. The Samyang 14mm I've seen getting good results if you are on a tight budget.

A real alternative in terms of performance? None really, I think mine is my sharpest lens corner to corner.

Alternatives in terms of wide angle? The Nikon 18-35 is good (but has some funky distortion) and lots of people recommend the sigma 12-24. However , neither have the IQ of the 16-35 (but then it can't do 12mm).

No real viable alternative in terms of image quality, i went through all the same as you, bought everything going but ended up with the superior 16-35mm f/4 VR, not as good as the 14-24mm f/2.8 but who shoots an ultra wide at f/2.8 anyway
