16-85mm or 18-200mm

I'm STILL looking for a new lens. I've narrowed it to these two. 16-85mm and the 18-200mm nikon.
I know the 18-200 has more zoom, but will the quality of the pictures still be good? I'm no pro and I have a D40 so would it be worth me getting that extra zoom and having it as an all round lens?

Still! I bought 2 lens since you last posted. 18-200 is a good all rounder and sharp enough unless you have some specific purpose for your pictures. Will always remain useful even if you buy a lot of primes later as a single lens solution in a Swiss army knife kind of utility.
 
Yeah sorry for making another post. Just narrowed it down to these 2. Like I said I'm no pro so don't want to buy lenses all the time.

Not a thread hijack but I had the same thoughts as you and ended up buying the 16-85mm. Was happy with the purchase and the main advantage was the compact size and weight compared to the 18-200.

I'm selling an as new 16-85mm now as I have decided to sell my Nikon kit and downsize, purely as we have a 7 month old baby now and I needed something more compact when out with him.

Yeah I'm actually going away shortly and wanted it for that. I'm was just asking in other peoples opinions what lens would be the best.

Have a look on pixel-peeper it will/should show you pictures of either set up on the D40..

You will have to select the D40 & either lens in the drop down menu..

I have a 16-85mm and have never used the 18-200mm, so I obviously favour the 16-85mm. ;)

I didn't even consider the 18-200m as with such a large range in one lens will always have more compromises in my mind. There's rumour of a 28-300mm lens, which again is trying to appeal to the one lens 'does everything' photographer. Going on holiday is when I want quality, to get the extra value from the holiday. I'm travelling alone though, so can carry what I want. I know people with families have other considerations so the 18-200mm may be a good idea.

As I was upgrading from the 18-70mm at the time, I went for the slightly wider angle (a surprising difference 16mm - 18mm), and the 85mm overlapped nicely with the 70-300mm I had. The 16-85mm was a step up in quality compared to the 18-70mm, which itself was considered one the best of Nikon's budget lenses.

For travelling, I think the 16-85mm is near enough the perfect lens, and the one I used 90% of the time when I've been away.
 
My 18-200 sits on my D90 unless I need a specific application (wider or longer or low light) its not a heavy lens and the range is so useful for me it out-weighs any quality issues. Its better to get an imperfect shot than miss it.....

I do understand the fact that if you want the length there will be some compromise in the quality.

I'm not sure I will need the 200 zoom but who knows... Hmmm
 
I've said it before but I'd get an 18-105 and save yourself £200 with which you could get a flash (which given your current lenses would be the far more sensible thing to do anyway).

I'll be getting rid of my other lenses ***. Can you tell that I can't make a decision. Lol. I think I'm going to buy and try. See what happens.

That can be the case - but the link gave you 2 pictures where you can see the slight difference in the 2mm between 16 & 18mm

Obviously the extra 115mm we would know about - if you get my meaning....

:agree: but on a D300. (That is, until I can afford a 24-70 and a 70-200)
 
16-85 no doubt. I use a 16-105mm on my Sony and it's absolutely brilliant. The difference between 16 and 18mm is much larger than you think as well. I also have a Tamron 18-200 which I pretty much never use because the range on the 16-105mm is perfect. I rarely find myself yearning to zoom in farther, but often wanting to zoom out more, so 16-85, without a shadow of a doubt :)

Be interested in what you think especially about the IQ, am considering this for my Fuji S5 pro which seems to be fussy about glass.

I have the 18 - 105 and its OK but I dont trust the plastic mount and I would like the 16mm

I'll let you know mate. I've done alot of reading, and this lens seems to be a good one!

Come back and let us know how you get on with the 16-85. As I said, I nearly went for it but instead chose a sigma 10-20 for the wide stuff and a 18-105 for general. Cost me about the same second hand as the 16-85 new.
 
16-85mm just popped in sales thread Jordan.... 10mins ago...
