Hi all.

Wasn't planning this at all, but just seen a Sigma 12-24mm going for a good price.
I currently have the 17-40mm F4 L and love it. I have no issues with it at all. Just thinking of swapping for the 12-24 due to the few mm's at the wide end.

If anyone can shed some light on this lens, good/bad points, 2nd hand price/value, image quality etc I'd be VERY grateful.

I'd be using it on a 5D.

Cheers

12mm will be pretty darn wide on a full-frame but could also allow for some serious creativity!

Well if you go for it and are selling the 17-40mm I may be looking for one soon. Scots buying rates of course ;)

I use the 12-24 on a 5DII and at 12mm it's seriously wide.
Positive points is that it feels chunky and well built, IQ is quite good, but obviously you get distortion at that width. Lightroom3 has a good go at correcting it though.

Hi Graham (another one :D )
When you say distortion, do you mean softness around the edges of the shot?

No. it seems fairly sharp, I'm talking more about barrel distortion.

I used it the other week I think.
I'll have a dig around and put one or two up.

Here's a few with that lens & your camera: Examples

Given that you have a 24-70 i say go for it. You lose that lovely L feel of the 17-40 though as well as the sealing.

I've found a couple of old ones that show the same place both at 12mm.
The first one is controlling the perspective

and the other is deliberately exaggerating it.

b****r me, that is W I D E

Thanks for posting. Very grateful to ya

Crikey! Those are cracking shots!

I've got both of these at the moment and in my opinion the Sigma does not have the IQ of the Canon, but it is still very useable. On many occassions I would reach for the Canon as I know it will deliver but it cannot compete on width and on full frame the 12-24 does give some mad effects.

Cheers Peter.
Might stick with the 17-40. As you say, the IQ on this lens is something else.
I'd love the extra mm's, but think I can live without it (for the time being :D )

Thanks peter :(

;)

Why don't you get it anyway? Without selling anything? :D

Who cares if the IQ is a bit poo in comparison - 12mm!!!!

Same here...

Funny how you've asked about how these two compare Andy as I'm considering one or the other on the 1DII
