17-40 L, worth the upgrade from Tamron?

Hi all.

I've a 70-200 L and love it. I've also a Tamron 17-50 2.8 which I use most of the time. I'm deliberating as to whether to upgrade to a 17-54 L.

I know L lens' are superior, but would I see twice the improvement over the Tamron, as that's what it would roughly cost to sell one for the other? Would others sell the Tamron in order to upgrade?

Assuming you have the 550D as stated in your details, I'd keep the Tamron. You'll lose out on length and aperture if you went for the 17-40L, plus it'll be heavier. Unless you're shooting in harsh conditions (and you'd need a new body if that were the case), I would use the money elsewhere or save it.
 
I bought the Tamron over the Canon. It seems like an easy decision to make as the Tamron has a greater zoom range and a wider aperture. For APS-C I honestly see no reason to get the 17-40mm f4 over a quality f2.8 zoom, plus the Tamron gives (arguably) better image quality too.
 
The Tamron 17-50 is better on a crop camera than the 17-40L. IQ is as good IMO, has a faster max aperture and has better range. The only real world advantage of the L is the usm AF and build.

Just because it has an 'L' on it, it doesn't mean its better (see my posts in the 70-200 thread!).

The Tamron is the best option by far, spend your money elsewhere!

Not a Canon user, but i have the tamron 17-50 2.8 too, my favourite lens. i have directly compared results from it to the Nikon 17-55 2.8 [3x more expensive than the tamron] - and could not tell the difference.

If it aint broke ...
 
I've used the 17-50 when I had crop bodies and I used to have and recently re-bought the 17-40L

I ca't quite put my finger on why, but the 17-40 is a smashing full frame lens, but disappoints a little on croppers.

Sorry to Hijack the thread, but would the 15-85mm Canon be a worthwhile upgrade to the 17-50mm tamron

Yes, if you want the extra focal length range and IS. No, if you want f/2.8.
 
There's many similar threads on this topic and the 15-85 in comparison, in particular - I would know because I owned the 17-40 and 17-50 in the past and now have the 15-85!

I bought the 15-85 for times when carrying a bag of dslr equipment is not possible- and for that purpose its fantastic.
