17-4omm L4 good low light fight night lens?

got this fight night coming up soon ring side not sure about flash so would this be a good lens or is there a better one thanks
 
I'd hardly describe any f/4 lens as good for low light. It's a nice enough lens (I've got one), and I'm sure it would work if you're prepared to bump the ISO up. But you'd probably be better with something faster if you're not allowed to use flash.

Maybe a prime? 35mm f/2 or even f/1.4 if you can manage it. If you really must have a zoom then f/2.8 would be the fastest you'll find.
 
A Canon EF-S 17-55 IS USM would be better. But not cheap, although if you are getting paid you should be using the best. I have not been to a boxing match live, but I guess they will be well lit, so that's something in your favour.

Being ring side is not necessarily the best place to be I wouldn't have thought. You will need to be constantly adjusting the focal length and focus as the action draws near or far away.

I would definitely try and get down there to test my intended equipment during a practice session.

I'm having the 17-40 vrs 17-55 lens debate at the moment. The low light aspect of the 17-55 is good but I worry about issues with dust that I have read about and also non L series build quality for close to L series prices.

tamron 17-50 f2.8 and a sigma 30/1.4

if theres a fair bit of light f2.8 zoom if its pitch you get 2 stops with the 30m prime
 
f/4 in low light conditions would be frustrating, at the very least I would suggest f/2.8 because you are capturing fast sports action under low lights. I would recommend hiring a lens.
 
grab yourself a 50mm f1.8 for £70 and enjoy the evening
 
Depends how far away you are going to be! Ringside on a 1.6 crop a 50mm will be fine a few rows back and you be getting the ring full frame! For me the Canon 1.4 is a lovely lens and fantastic in low light, doesn't look much but....
