17-55 against 18-55 lens

Ok folks maybe someone can help me with this one.

I know that the main difference between these two Canon lenses are the max aperture setting.
But what I really want to know is what is the difference in field of view between 17 & 18mm? Is it a big difference?
I assume there has to be for Canon to make the difference.

Is it as simple as 1mm greater which is then magnified by the lens?
 
The difference is not that much. Take a step back and you get pretty much the same view.

75° 20' on the 18 vs 68° 40' so extra 3 degrees on each side.

When you compare like 10mm against 12mm the difference is massive but 17 vs 18 there's hardly anything there, though no doubt it's nice to have.

There is a difference in 1mm, but the main advantage of the 17-55 over the 18-55 is the vastly improved image quality.
 
Also using f/2.8 lenses activates additional high precision AF sensors on most bodies, giving you faster and more accurate focusing. At least on the 7D this is really noticeable, the 17-55 almost never hunts even when shooting in close to complete darkness.
 
Agree with the above, I went from 18-55 to 16-85 on another camera system ending with "on", and the only time the 2mm makes a difference is indoors, in small rooms... which is one of the reasons I wanted it. Outdoors there's pretty much hee-haw in it to my eyes, as has been mentioned if you want wide 10mm or 12mm is where it's at. Or the new Sigma 8-16mm!
