17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens - Should there be play in it?

Just purchased one off ebay. When it is fully closed (not extended) there is play / wobble in the end of it (lens cap end). Is this normal or something to worry about?

a have the same lens and there is a very very small amount of wobble, seems normal enough to me - hadn't noticed it until you mentioned it just then! I reckon it moves less than 1mm either side when moved gently

i too have the same lens I bought it new and there is a very small amount of movement, certainly not a huge amount. as KFridge said probably no more than about 1mm
