H guys,

I got a 17-85mm from Ebay, boxed, looks as new was really inpressed. So got it home and tried it out. I usually try and AF ih the cap on to see if it goes all te way from minimum focus to infinity as all the rest of my lenes do....... it didnt it jus stuttered back and forward. So tried some sample shots it really struggled (did after a bit of stuttering) to get a focus especially at anything over the 17mm. Its my first USM lens and guessen this aint rite.

I have a HSM sigy and when focusing with cap on it goes fro infinity to minumum back to infinity in about a second, also gets a focus point nearimmediately. Now the seller says he will refund no problem, just want clrification sumthing is amiss or am i doing somthing wrong?

Cheers

Ian

Take the cap off!

Why are you testing it with the cap on, take it off then see if it works?

lol I have tested it with the cap off and it seems slowand a bit..... hit and miss. I am pretty certain its faulty just making sure there isnt anything else it could be.

When trying to focuswith the lens cap on shoudl a lens not try to go through its full range thou?

Doesn't sound right to me. I used to have one and it didn't hunt. Have you tried it in One Shot mode?

Yeah I made sure it was in one shot mode, should it snap imediately to focus caus this onecertainly desnt, it bounces back and forth a few times, it i posted a vid of the distance window would that help?

It may hunt a bit in low light. What focus point/points are you using?

Tried it with them all then just centre point, some of the shot are either back or front focusing too. Just seems slower than my old kit lens and a hell of alot more unreliable than my sigy 10-20mm.

Definately not right, sounds faulty to me. Do you have another body to try it on, may be worth a go. Give the contacts a good clean too.

I odnt have another body my mate has a 450dI will try on his, may take it into Jessops or somthing and seewhat they say. Nothing really to worry about as the guy will efud just want to make sure there is a problem before I send it back and look a bit silly, thanks for you help dave.

I'm out of ideas. See if Jessops will try it on another body. Grasping at straws though as it sounds like a faulty lens. Good luck.

The amount of people who post without actually reading threads frustrates me. He clearly said that it was working incorrectly with the cap on or off, and indeed by what he says - this lens is completely and utterly knackered. Send it back!

-> On second thoughts, have you tried cleaning the contacts with an eraser?

:), I didnt want to say what you said but thank you,I don have an eraser handy but will give it a go, thanks. Its a shame cause i seems a really handy lens.

Dave and tren chel,

I cleaned the connections, i found a rubber :), and it appears to have done the job. Working perfectly, AF is flying and focus is solid, I done the little chart thingy. Only other thing which I am pretty sure normal is the IS nois its quite noticeable like a faint hiss (the definite sound of something engaging), is this normal?

Thanks again for your imput.

If I put my 18-55 up to my ear I can hear the IS, so I reckon its fine.

Thansk or the responce I will use it over the next few days and ee if everything is well, going out hiking tomorrow.

i've always found my 17-85 has a nice fast focus, definitely better than the kit lens. sounds knacked!
