18-200is or 24-105L , what would you recommend?

Hello everybody! :)
I'm new to this forum & hope to get to know you all a little better over time.

I have a dilemma;
I have recently been bitten by the photography bug, I presently own a 1000D
& am looking to upgrade from my kit lens to a general purpose zoom.
The dilemma is.. should I go for the Canon 18-200 IS (is it that bad optically?) Or should I push the budget & go for the 24-105 L f4 is usm (is it that good?)

Most people I think would say invest in good lenses now & upgrade the body when needed, is that the best option?

I think I could live with the 24mm maximum wide plus I'd also have my kit lens if needed (18-55 Is) & will also purchase a 50mm 1.8 prime
 
18-200 isn't an upgrade to the 18-55 IS. It is a travel/convenience lens, for those of us who are lazy to change lenses (I had it too). It would be interesting to know what you find lacking in the 18-55 IS before a suitable alternative could be recommended i.e. reach, max aperture, contrast, sharpness, colour, build quality, red ring etc?
 
Well I'm no professional by any means but I would like a bit more zoom than my 18-55 gives me. I think what I'm trying to get at is will I regret not spending a little extra on the L lens as my photography skills grow?

I just like photographing anything & everything at the mo (if not just to improve my understanding), so a general purpose zoom I think would be best for me to do this
 
If zoom reach is your main lack at present, then you may want to consider the following:
- 15-85 IS
- 24-105L

Or if you're happy changing lenses
- 55-250 IS
- 70-200 (one of the 5 variations)

I think you would be disappointed with the 18-200, as although it's convenient for it's zoom range, it doesn't offer better 'quality' than your current kit lens. Lens resale value is so high that (especially for L lenses), you can gradually buy and sell on for very little loss.

If you're after some of the other lens attributes I listed above, then it leads you down a different path of lenses e.g. 17-55 IS or 24-70L...
 
It's a tough one, ive got lots of head scratching to do!
The 17-40 L & 24-105 L sounds like a nice combo for a crop sensor.. not cheap though

If you've got the cash, buy the best you can or you'll just find yourself upgrading sooner than you have to. L lenses tend to hold their value pretty well too.

tbh, those two are best suited for full frame, they just happen to be 'relatively cheap' L lenses that do a decent job on cropped too :)

I personally would prefer an ultrawideangle lens instead of the 17-40 to complement a standard zoom, something like Tokina 11-16 or Canon 10-22

My thoughts exactly. Tokina 12-24mm provides the best match mm by mm, but others are great too.
