Hey folks,

I just got my new 15-85 walkabout. I took a couple of comparison pics.

(both taken with a nifty fifty)

Quite a difference in weight and quality. Silent AF and very fast...

However, I took a simple photo with flash to see how much the image quality differed.

Without looking at the exif, can you tell which is which?

Hard to spot the difference.....

id say that first one is the 15-85.... how do you check the exif data on pics on here?

I'm going for the top pic as the 15-85?

You'll see very little difference when comparing them on a 450d. Pop em on an 18mp body and will stand out more.

You're not going to see much, if any difference in image quality posted at that size:shrug:

You will see a difference on the 450d! I'd be interested to know why you think you wouldn't? You cant judge it on the pics posted though as they are too small.

Because each lens has varying capability to reproduce a given amount of detail. The kit lens compared to the higher quality lens will suffer noticeably on higher pixel count sensor. The kit lens is probably just capable at 12mp, push this to 18 and the difference will shine.

The difference is, your new lens goes to 15mm, and on to 85mm. It has less distortion. It is sharper.

Shoot at a low f/number and compare sharpness in the corners of a big enlargement. You'll see nothing on a tiny web image - the cheapest compact wouldn't show any difference at that size.

Interesting replies.

Actually its the bottom one :-)

I compared them at 100% and I can't see much difference..... I think the 15-85 gives very slightly richer colours. I guess I was expecting more....

I would have posted them as clickable but I have no idea how to do that.

Cheers

...I suppose it also depends what you're shooting. A rich landscape, both lenses stopped down might produce a different result.
