18-55 lens Sticky/Scratchy Zoom

My 18-55 kit lens has started getting quite a sticky/scratchy feel to the zoom especially at the wider end. I bought it second hand as my first lens at the start of the year and noticed it wasn't as smooth as I thought it would be a quick google showed that a few people had that problem and I assumed it was just because it was a cheap lens. Now however it is really sticky it feels like there is grit in the mechanism and is no where near as slick as my 55-250 or my 18-135.

I don't really use this lens anymore as the 18-135 has taken over from it and the only really use I see for it is to sell with my camera as a Package when I decided to buy a new one.

I was wondering weather it was worth taking it apart to see if anything noticeable was wrong. I'm reasonable competent with my hands, and have been building PC's and rebuilding motorbikes for years. Is this something a random could take apart and clean/grease, what I the chances I will **** it up?

For the cost of a replacement if necessary or as you don't use it any longer I'd say take it apart and see what you can do. If someone was going to buy your camera and came to try it and you gave them a poor lens they may think the camera is the same and not buy.
Like you, I've been building computers and scooters for years but I definitely wouldn't have the confidence of taking apart an expensive L lens or similar, but a cheap kit lens that I weren't too bothered with would be doomed.
