18-55 or 18-70

Hi all,
Have a bit of a dilema with lens choice, i know its not quite a extravagant as a new 70-200 or a 300mm 2.8 prime but would be grateful for your help. Anyway the question i want to ask is would it be worth selling my 18-55 AF-S VR for a 18-70mm AF-S ?

Reason for this is because i would like a bit more reach but not as much as the 18-105. The only thing thats putting me off a bit is no VR but the upside the 18-70 is internal focusing and this would be great to have.

PS before anyone suggests 17-55 F2.8, im a poor student that at the moment cant afford that just looking for a slight upgrade at the moment.
 
I have the 18-70 and it is a cracking lens..I also have an 18-105 with VR. Bought S/H on this site. I would not part with it especially for hand held shots...Your call both are super but the 80-105 cuts it for me!
 
18-55 or 18-70 of what ? Nikon ? looks like. I would get 50mm f1.8 with out second guessing myself . I've had 18-55mm - nice lens, but 50mm is the real deal if you don't have a lot of money.
 
Another vote here for the 18-70mm.... I use one!
Its construction is way better than the kit lens for a start; it has a metal mount and a rubber gasket to help keep crud out of the lens and camera. Its also F/3.5-4.5 instead of 4.5-5.6, so is a bit faster too. For most shots at these lengths its not really necessary to have VR....certainly doesnt make a difference to me anyway. The other great thing is you can pick them up off ebay used for around the £100 mark. Excellent lens and well reviewed too.
 
I loved my 18-70 when I used Dx and only sold it on when I went FF (and even then, I only parted with it because the buyer of my D200 needed a starter lens). Mifsuds have one in their 2nd hand section for £169 (+ P&P).

Ye thats one of the reason i am very intrested in this, i have been told its one of the best if not the best kit lens and as you say can be picked up quite cheap.

Thanks for that always nice to know, starting to get very tempted now to chop in the 18-55.
 
The Nikon 18-70 really is a cracker of a lens for the money. If I had a choice of the two you mention it would be the 18-70 hands down.

Cheers for that, reckon its worth selling the 18-55 for the 18-70 or is the difference not much ?
 
I would say if you don't have either of these, get the 18-70, its image quality is probably the same, or not really distinguishable, but it gives me more confidences with the built, the look of it, and the handling etc..

But in this case, you already got the 18-55 which is very good indeed, I can't think of a reason selling it for the 18-70...
My suggest would be saving up some money and get the 16-85 if you can - or even the tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non vc :)

It helps if you have your camera details in your profile then we can talk more about lens and know what make you talking about.

I may have posted this before?? . . . but in the past 6 months I have rationalised my camera equipment and the way I look at photography. In the rationalisation, I sold off my lenses and D90. Replacing with a D5000 body, the lens I kept was the Nikon 18-70.

Thats it, this is the only lens I have of the walk about type . . . :thinking: sorry, kept a 1.8 50mm prime, but with this sort of quality, (these shots are cropped up to 50%!), I'm the limiting factor:) why cramp my style any further. Keeping the 50mm just in case I feel 'the need for speed' :lol:

I read somewhere, even pros., keep an 18-70 tucked away . . . ? Read Ken Rockwell's assessment of it, he may be a bit cranky, but he puts the facts down and dont pull punches:thumbs:

I'm no expert, dont want to be . . . I just enjoy my 'simple' outfit and its versatility :shrug:;)

Just my two penneth for what its worth . . . :bonk:

Cheers for that, as you say build quality of 18-70 also looks a bit better.

Hmmm main reason is for the bit of extra reach, is alot slightly faster but the main thing that sells it for me in internal focus as at the moment the 18-55 has a moving system and is a pain to use with filters. Would love a 16-85 or even a 17-50 but sadly cant afford it and wont be able to for a good while to come what with car insurance ect (stupidly high)
