While I'm saving my pennies toward a Nik 17-55 2.8 I need a lens at a similar range for my D300. I've been using the 18-55 non VR from the D40 kit but I'm hoping to sell that shortly leaving me with no walk around lens. I've been looking at the 18-70mm as it has a decent focal range, metal mount, decent size for mounting on the D300 and seems to be a decent lens. I Know Ken Rockwell needs to be taken with a pinch of salt but he recco's going for the 18-55mm instead. What are your views? Don't really want to spend more than around the £100 mark with Christmas etc round the corner.

Cheers mi dears

PS - looking at 2nd hand obviously

I had the 18-55 very very briefly, i hated it. Got the 18-70 and havent looked back

At that focal length VR makes little/no difference anyway

Thanks Peter
I did have the same thought but wanted to see what general opinion was of those who had experience of either or both lenses.

Cheers

I had the 18-55 non vr and now have the 18-70 and there is a noticeable difference (to me at least) in the IQ of the 18-70 over the kit lens. I don't think you will be disapointed with the 18-70

I've just got the 18-70mm for £75 it was boxed with everything in perfect condition. I would recommend one to anyone. The lens is much higher quality than the kit 18-55 IMO. You will get one for £70/80 on eBay easy.
