1920 x 1080 - Do i need to get a new graphics card ?

I hope this is an easy question for somebody to answer.........

I have a new screen which is 1920 x 1080 but the settings in my control panel display options don't go that high.

For now I've just set it to 1600 x 900 as 1280 x 1024 mucks up the 'shape' of things.

I'm guessing the graphics card in the PC is what's restricting me ?????
 
I had this problem some time ago and had to replace the graphics card.. it might be worth downloading the latest drivers for your current one before looking for a replacement though.
 
it'll prob be because your display hasn't been discovered properly, therefore your graphics card doesn't know what resolution it can support.

go into Device Manager and scan for new hardware.
 
If I right click on the above and select 'update driver' it asks me to insert the installation CD that came with the hardware.

Does this mean the one that came with the PC or the one which came with the screen ?

I put the CD in which came with the screen and did the 'update driver' option on the Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller.

It ran for a while then displayed the following..............

The wizard could not find a match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed.
 
The display drivers on the CD HP 2159 Series Wide LCD Monitor (Version 1.0.0.0) have already been installed
 
honestly with a resolution that high i'd go for even the most basic dedicated graphic card to make life for your computer easier as yours is currently an integrated chipset.

i should be listing one in the classifieds soon but it may not be what you're after :) but would do the job

you dont want to update your monitor driver onto your graphics card.. :)

depends what its being used for to be honest.. plus the OP hasnt mentioned if its a desktop or laptop.. im suspecting laptop, i think its a mobile chipset? if it is a desktop the OP needs to find out the graphics slot type too :)
 
imho whatever he's using it for he could do with dedicated graphics card at 1920x1080

but you're right finding out the slot type would be important for upgrades and i just presumed if he was asking to upgrade the graphics he had a desktop :)
 
That is purely a software graphics controller which is even poorer than the inbuilt hardware controllers built into cheapo motherboards, you will need a dedicated card to run that resolution, there might be some sort of hack on the bweb but that will probably reduce your refresh rate which will cause screen flicker.
 
i wouldn't say it depends neil because it's my humble opinion, which you're entitled to disagree with :)
 
I dont know if you have tried this but what about 'advanced' --> monitor tab --> uncheck 'hide modes that this monitor cannot display' (in vista)

That should give you a much bigger range which hopefully includes 1920x1080.

fair enough, i dont have any issues with the set up to be honest. providing the machine has enough memory to service the applications plus the graphics memory then i cant see an issue unless youre running games, video rendering or playing back HD content.

but like you say potato potato.. depends what the OP uses it for at the end of the day.

1600 X 1200
1600 X 900......which I've been using
1280 X 1024.....which was the wrong shape
lots of new smaller ones.

I tried it at 1920 X 1200 and everything went really small but the picture quality was much much better.

Unfortunately a message (looked like a hp screen message rather than a PC message) popped up saying Input Signal out of Range and then a message to say the monitor is going to sleep. :thinking:

Thats because the graphics controller cant handle it, your monitor might be able to handle it but the inbuilt controller on the mobo cant

Buy a seperate card, youre probably going to want an older AGP type card as well as the Dimension 2400 is old technology, my bet would be to buy a decent PC
 
if you've not already done so, upgrade your graphics cards drivers :]
 
I think it might be time for a PC upgrade anyway.

This particular DELL PC often grinds to a halt and we only got the new screen so it could be used in the family room for watching DVD's or i-player etc etc.

In terms of photo editing - the small DELL screen showed everything nice and sharp but the new bigger widescreen is not as sharp and on some photographs the colours tend to (there must be a word for this) show as flat banded areas. Not ideal when you're wanting to pp images.

I'm asuming this screen would perform better if I got a newer PC ????

We've a decent printer, speaker system, printer etc etc so it's only the 'tower' part I need.

Whatever you do with the graphics card you should be aware that everything will be at that smaller size you saw when you changed the settings before.
If you don't like the display at that size then you maybe want to re-think whether you need the higher resolution at all?
 
I've just checked my graphics setting in both of my computers and both support 1920x1080.

One is for a Dual core PC fitted with a 16x Express PCI: the card is an Asus Extreme AX 300 series and the other card fitted to my Asus Terminator PC is an ATI Radeon 9100 IGP.

As far as I remember I got both of these at computer fairs for about £1.00 each.

I didn't have a driver disc for either card but used Driver Robot to locate the drivers for me.

Then I loaded them in and everything worked fine.

So I would think that virtually any modern grahics card would support your monitor.
 
google suggests that the intel graphics chip supports up to 2048x1536..

has the OP update the driver for the graphics card yet?

I think thats the other way around :)

The monitor can't accept the signal from the graphics card, not that the graphics card can't handle "it".

Not strictly true, the controller needs to be able to output 1920x1080 and the Monitor also needs to be able to display this resolution and at the default refresh rate, if they arent compatable then no amount of tinkering will work without the refresh rate causing flicker.

Bear in mind the age of the PC and onboard controller, were monitors with such high resolutions available 5 years ago when the Dell 2400 was was doing the rounds, if not then what was the point in making an onboard controller able to work with such high resolutions, that was why dedicated AGP slots were used.

That's the bit I'm struggling with.

I think I tried it last night (see earlier posts) :thinking:

I also ran the Driver Robot thing earlier this morning which is now saying I have 22 driver updates pending but is asking for a code which should have arrived via email but hasn't. I'm not sure if this is because I chose not to pay.

Did the download and unzipped the file.

then all this


1. Click "Start" then right click on "My Computer" icon and then click on
"Properties".

2. Click on "Hardware" Tab and select "Device Manager". (NOTE: IF UPDATING
DRIVER GO TO STEP 3B)

3a. Double click "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)". (Go To STEP 4)

3b. Select "Display adapters" then Double click on the graphics controller
shown.

4. Click on "Driver" tab and select "Update Driver...".

5. Select the following option: "Install from a list or
specific location (Advanced)". Click on the "Next" button.

6. Select the following option: "Don't search. I will choose the driver to
install". Click on the "Next" button.
(NOTE: IF UPDATING DRIVER GO TO STEP 8)

7. Select "Display adapters". Click on the "Next" button.

8. Click on the "Have Disk..." button and then the "Browse"
button.

9. Enter the directory where you unzipped the file you downloaded,

It says it says Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller which is the same - (thought something may have been different) ???
