1D/5D tethered shooting troubles

Yes
I am trying to set up tethered shooting with lightroom on my pc. But i'm falling at the first hurdle.

I have a 5d and a 1dmk2, both missing the utilities cd.

The canon website doesn't seem to have this software available to download for these models, so i have downloaded eos utilities for the 40d, hoping/assuming that it's thye same software for everything.

With the 5d, i open up the utility software and click on the camera settings/remote shooting option. A message then pops up saying "to use this function, set the connection of camera to PC connection and reconnect".

I do that, and the camera settings/remote shooting option on the utilities menu stays greyed out, it doesn't recognise that anything is connected at all.

With 1D, it also doesn't recognise anything is connected.

Can anyone shed some light on this please?

5D > Go to the menu, scroll to Communication (between Video System and Format) and change it to PC Connect.).

1D MkII might be similar but I have never owned or used one. :(

BTW: you can download EOS Utility here...

That's what i have done. But when the camera is set to pc connect, tethered shooting is no longer an option in the eos utility main screen.
I shall download you version and give it a go.

Cheers

I can use EOS Utility to shoot tethered with my 1D Mk2 but I need to use a firewire cable instead of a usb cable. You can change the personal settings with this set up as well.

Are you using the original USB lead on the 5D?

I've experienced problems with cheap ones, memory card reader cables do seem work okay though.

Aside from connecting it up, switching the camera on you should be good to go. Although it can be a PITA at times, I know because I was using that method today... :bang:

No it's not the original usb lead, i dont have that eirther.

It's not a cheap one though.

Hmm, I will grab the 5D at work tomorrow and give it a go for you.

I seem to remember having to fiddle with it for a couple of minutes but it did work.

Thanks. That would be good if you get a chance.

I think i shall try another computer at the weekend, see if i can rule out it being an issue with my machine.

You need the EOS Utilities disk V 11.0 for the drivers for the 5D. Had this same problem several years ago in a PC that I had the drivers for the 20D loaded but it wouldn't see the 5D. Updating zoom browser with the V11 disk cured the problem.

You may find downloading the latest update from Canon may cure the problem.

Having said that if you have Lightroom V 3 it supports tethered shooting for a lot of Canon cameras including the 5D

Ahh i see.
I only have lightroom 2, i don't have 3 yet.

How would i go about getting the 5d version of the software as they don't allow you to download it from their website?

Ugh, just tried plugging the 5D into my workstation and it couldn't get the driver. I'm running Vista x64 so that might be the cause.

I'll try and track down a driver for you, we don't have the original CDs either.

I see, i am running the 64bit version of win 7, maybe that's the problem.
Although the updater software you can download from canon do state the are ok.

I love computers, they are brilliant.

I tried this with mine, laptop doesnt have a firewire port so I got a firewire card, still no joy, PC just wouldnt recognise the camera (even got a mains adapter to power the card - still no joy). E-mailed Canon, less than useless, just got a standard reply saying I needed a Pc/Laptop with firewire and teh appropriate s/w (which is no longer downloadable). I wanted to alter some personal settings.
Gave up in the end.

I'm sure I had it working at on that machine but obviously not, we generally use 450d and 500d bodies when shooting tethered for live view.

Perhaps downloading the 30-day trial of Lr 3 will get the driver on your machine though?

PM me and I'll send you a copy if Byker hasn't done so already.

to confirm what is said earlier you can only shoot tethered on the 1d mk2 with firewire

we've had the thread before and I spent yonks trying to get it to wok

gave up and bought a mk4 instead!

or you could use an eyefi card, but i have to say mine is sadly lacking in reliability

Ok, so if the 1D wont do it that's not a major problem, i would probably prefer to be using the 5d anyway.

Although i do have a firewire card in my pc, it doesn't have the correct socket.
