Has anyone got any experience with these cameras and the differences in image quality? I think they've got the very similar sensors, the iii has slightly higher MP count and the increased fps could increase the number of "keepers" you get, but is it worth the ~£200 price different in today's 2nd hand market?

I've had a play with a 1D3 and I have a 1DSii and I can say the layout of the buttons & ergonomics on the 1D3 are much improved from my 1DSii. I imagine the screens are also better on the 1D3.

Can't comment on the IQ though, although I'd suggest it'd probably be hard to tell the difference.

I've had both and would say that the MkIII is worth the extra. The MkIII (and 40D) sensors had that little extra something that's hard to quantify and the 1DMkIV (and 50D) sacrificed something for the extra MP (and other functionality) when the superseded the previous generation.

I've had 1D2, 1D2n and 1D3

I'd definately go for the 1D3. Images do seem cleaner and cropping is better, ISO can be pushed further, the screen is much better, It's also a bit lighter, much improved battery life too.

Not sure if you shoot RAW or jpeg but I never thought jpeg were that good straight from the 1D2 or 1D2n so found myself shooting RAW more often than I wanted to.

If you're not used to using the buttons on the 1D2 and 1D2n they can be a fiddle compared to the 1D3 which works like most other more modern Canon DSLRs.
 
I had high ISO banding on my mk IIn (>800 ISO) and it was annoying to say the least. The mk3's seem very good value right now and would be my choice.
 
I have had the both, The IQ of the mk3 is superior,but watch out for the batch with sub mirror fix.The seriel numbers can be found on the web

Congratulations - you will be smitten but word of warning - any 1D body is hard to move away from.
