1D IV what would they improve if they replace ?

I have the 5d mkll and a 50d as a back up, been saving a while now and with xmas bonus do I buy the 1d. You can read reveiws all day long, some say they are going to replace soon some say not. Have read on here the 5d and
1d are a great combo to have for weddings. This year I plan to put some time in and really take some great shots, all the kit and tec research i do just need to spend more time out and about.

I wouldn't expect a Mark V on the horizon when they haven't even released a 1DsMKIV.

Whenever they release one body they start working on the next, so I don't think release date should be a factor in decision making unless it is to get a good deal on stock of the older model on release of the new.

I had a 5D Classic and 50D last year and have upgraded to a 1DsII and a 1D3. I much prefer the 1-series bodies - firstly they just feel right to my hands, I love the solid build and the quality of the output is great. I much prefer the sharp punchy shots I get out of my 10mp 1D3 to the 15mp 50D. The 50D was great, but the 1D3 is better.

I think with servo focus there is more opportunity for error with the 1D cameras as the settings that allow optimisation of the AF also allow for user error. I rarely use servo focus, but when I do I find that the default setting on tracking speed is usually the worst setting! Slowing it up usually is best, but some report the opposite and have it set at max.

The battery life is great and it was nice to take some shots in a heavy snowfall without worrying about damage to the camera. The long shutter life is reassuring as well.

The 1DIV is reportedly brilliant - I'd get one without hesitation. Certainly will be a good pairing with the 5DII for weddings.

I would save yourself some pennies and give the 1D4 a miss.Great camera but still has it's faults.
The one thing I have learned over the last 12 months is that there is no holy grail(yet) when it comes to cameras.
We should see a 5DMK3 towards the end of 2011.I would wait and see what that brings to the table.
For what you shoot I actually think a 1DSMK3 would be better.Cheaper(2nd hand) and focuses better in low light than the 1D4.Great low iso quality.Much better than the 5DMK2.

I spent a couple of weeks comparing 1Ds 3, 7D (my 2 bodies) and a 1D4.

Main conclusions are..

1Ds 3..excellent IQ and adequate noise performance up to 1600 iso, good autofocus, FPS adequate for most use. A great all round body and one I'll keep for years (already owned it for almost 3). Full frame may be a disadvantage for wildlife, however -I use for closer shots with a 70-200.

7D IQ good as long as you are not using greater than iso 800, otherwise I use a noise reduction programme for IQ improvement. Excellent AF and the ability to have spot focus on all lenses a really important consideration. 1.6 crop great for wildlife at a distance.

1D mk 4 best for noise performance, but no spot focus except with super teles a real and inexplicable omission. 10 fps excellent, although to be honest I haven't found the 8fps of the 7D a problem.

So that's my opinion for wildlife, however for weddings I'd have no hesitation for recommending the 1Ds mk 3.

It's af is miles better than the antiquated system on the 5D2 (same as 5D1 ) and the 5D3 is reputed to have the same as the vastly improved 7D system....but it's not out yet!!

File quality is excellent and low noise performance is more than adequate and they seem to me to be excellent value for money now at around £2400 or so, the rumour is that it's not even being replaced in 2011!!

Have to agree with what George has said having owned all of the above cameras over the last 12 months.

The 1.3 crop of the 1D4 was the killer for me on that camera though.Also not the greatest af in very low light.

I would possibly look at replacing your 50D with a 7D.It is definitely the best bang for buck Canon camera available at the minute.This is just my opinion but having used the 1D4 and 7D "a lot" the 1D4 is not worth anywhere near the price difference would have you believe.

Yup Gary,

I think for weddings the mk 3 1Ds, being full frame, is the answer...I absolutely agree that the 7D/1D4 price differential is not worth it- a great shame they made the 7D 18 mpix, that sensor with say 14 Mp and 1.6 crop would be a killer.

I'll await the 1D5 with interest....sooner the better!!

Better get 1D mkIII cheap now [to replace 50D]. IQ is excellent to ISO 1600, still very good at 3200, and usable at 6400. AF is way ahead of anything non 1-series and even faster than mk2. I wouldn't hesitate using it for any paid job.

mkIV main difference is video and more MP.

True.. its worth more!!


Its all relative to what your doing.. I have a mkIII and bought the mkIV as soon as it was released... The money was well worth it to me... Maybe not to others.. Depends what your using it for...you can't simply tell a forum its not worth the money..

I think I explained my reasons in the post above, not for me but perhaps for others...;)
 
The 7d has a 1.6 crop, most of my work is low light close up. I thought 1.3 crop was going in the wrong direction from the full frame 5d. The 8fps sounds nice, Iv AF seems to have a ? over it from members on here at low light. All the utude reviews seem to lead you to think it is amazing.
 
The main problem which some of us have found with the 7D is it's noise above 800 iso.

For weddings I'd have thought that a fast lens (2.8 at least) and full frame would suit better, and the 2nd hand 1Ds 3 will last you years..
