I have got the 1d mk11n and charged the battery ready for my first 'play' and have 2 questions please
The instructions say I have to use the 1EEE1394 port / cable. This is supplied ( is this whats known as the firewire cable?) but I don't have a matching port on my pc - The instructions say not to use the usb cable as it won't communicate - so why supply it? Is there a work around or do I have to have the required port added to my pc?

second question - Having a play, the rotary wheel on the back seems to work if switched on or off. Is this normal or is it only needed to be on in certain modes?
Thanks in advance, it's raining here so I cant go out and play either :(

USB vs Firewire question - the USB really just turns the Camera into an accessible storage device so you can access your pictures etc.

The firewire on the other hand allows you to also configure the 'custom personal' settings that are not available from the main menu - plus a lot more many things. However, you are right - anything you can do via the firewire should also be accessible via the USB but it's not unfortunately.

As for the rear rotary hopefully someone else can help you on that one - sorry!

As Razor has said Firewire just lets you access a few more features but there is no reason you can't take pictures and download them to your laptop/pc using the USB cable.

I'm also not quite sure what you mean by the rotary wheel question, maybe someone who owns the camera can explain further.

And as for rain = no picture taking. Don't worry about the camera all the 1D series are very well weather sealed along with L series lenses. So if you do have an L lens then stick it on the front and get gan out and shooting!

Thanks for the replys, the setup software won't complete without conecting via the FireWire cable. I might have to see if I can add a port to the pc as I would luke to also add my name to the exif data.

Just checked the rotary wheel on my camera. It will allow exposure compensation to be made when it is switched on. If it is not switched on then no exposure compensation can be made.

The amount of times I've been shooting football in heavy rain with my Mark II I am suprised it even switches on, but it is such a good camera, built to last.

I think that would be a good move. I've never bothered with the firewire link on mine, just pinged the card out and read it (as my PC doesn't have a firewire port either.)
I think you can get an aftermarket firewire card quite cheaply.

Bought mine from Novatech for £10, used it once to put my details into camera and never used it since. Unfortunately its the only way you can customize the personal functions (not custom functions) and I used EOS Utility (i think) to access these and changing the EXIF details (i.e. name).

excellent, I have a 'port' ordered! The camera is second hand but 'as new' I would rather have my name in there rather than somebody elses.
