1D Mark 2 & 40D - change to 1D Mark 3 or 7D or stick ?

Simple really
I have a minty 1D Mark 2 and a minty 40D
Dilema = want just one 'action' body. Without getting into a huge debate as the full frame issue is taken care of.

Thoughts:

AF on 40D is found wanting but I'm happy for still birds and cropping
AF on 1d Mark 2 is fab for moving birds but cropping is pushing it a bit
Noise - not great with either when I want to retain shutter speed in poor light.
Love 1D body

So.....

1 = swap 40D and 1D2 for a 7D = small financial hit
2 = swap 40D and 1D2 for a 1Dmark 3 = a bit more of a financial hit
3 = Just Keep the two cameras I have

Just want to add - I've had 7D (for a trial) and I'm adamant AF is not a step up from a 1D2 but resolution is so much better but I've not experienced the 1D3

In the same boat, but with a 20D..... keeping my options open because still not convinced that the 7D hits the mark and full frame just doesn't float my boat

Ideal world would be because the 1DX is around the corner, the market might be wash with 2nd hand 1D MKIII's or MKIV's because the "must haves" need an upgrade so plenty of opportunity to bag one of canons last decent sports camera bodies as its chopping the 1.3x body from its range :nuts::shrug::bonk::bonk:

1D mark 4 would be a no brainer for me Peter but it's more than I want to spend.

7D if you want more pixels for birding.

1D3 has only marginally more pixels than 1D2 with its 1.3x crop factor. However 1D3 is the better action camera for anything that doesn't need heavy cropping.
