Anyone got a spare copy of the CD(s) that came with the 1D mk2, just bought a second hand camera (no s/w). Canon helpdesk said buy new and pointed me at their website (magazine) which I am happy to do except they dont keep it anymore (too old?? A 5 yr old pro spec camera cant now communicate with a new pc - not very good that).
Had I bought it new and now having lost or damaged the CD I dont think I'd be lining up a mk 4 as a replacement if I thought it wouldnt communicate in 5 yrs time.

Quite happy to pay for said CD if you no longer need them or can make me a copy.

Pm me your address and I will pop the disks I have in the post.

Very kind thankyou. However it seems I need to use firewire to change my personal setting? This being so I may have a problem as my pc doesnt have firewire, but I might know someone that does :)

pm being sent.

Surely you just connect the camera via USB, and it will come up on the desktop and you can simply drag the images from it? That used to work fine with an Olympus E1. Then again, it might be different for Windows users.

you need to use firewire on the 1d's before the mk3.

That works fine or I can use my card read (prefered option) but re-setting custom functions or tethered shooting requires connecting to Canon s/w and I think firewire not usb cable (and card in pc).

Now can I connect an external firewire somehow?

(was a lot easier with film cameras :) )

I bought an internal card that pushed in an empty space in the motherboard. When turned on it automatically searched and found the driver. I paid £15 from my local pc shop because I couldn't wait to order one from the net!

 tis the way to go. An PCI firewire card is all you need :)

I dont have a desktop pc I only have a laptop.
Looks like I can get a usb to firewire cable, might try that option as I alraedy have the latest s/w from my 50D, assuming it will recognise an 'old' camera.

My macbook had a couple FW holes, so I only had to pop in to PCWorld and got a cable for £9. USB should also work to download photos, but is painfully slow.

You can also use card reader if you prefer, and update metadata on each shot in PP.

I imagine Canon hates it when people reuse cameras. Instead of going to scrapyard they serve for another few years, and they miss out on the sales of 5D2 (my case) or 1D4 (your case). It is good for environment though, and time to sleep since I talk rubbish now.

Having used the 1D mk 2 for a few days (literally) and although I think the ergonomics leave a little to be desired I am convinced already that its better than my 50D (which I bought new last year - damn!!!), especially at 800 ISO that my next camera will almost certainly be another 1 series, which I wouldnt have bought new (too expensive to buy on a whim) so second hand cameras are a good testing ground and Canon will reap the benefits eventually.

Going to try a firewire/usb adapter cable and see if I can get into the personal functions that way, images are downloaded via a card reader (which is a must-have on the 50D). Watch this space (if at all interested).
