I'm thinking about buying a Mk2/Mk2N. On my current 50D I use back button focus and prefer to select the focus point manually using the joystick. Can any users tell me please how this is done on the Mk2/2N cameras, and is it as easy and intuitive as the joystick of the 50D? In an ideal world of course I'd have enough cash for a Mk3.

Oddly enough I prefer the 1d Mk2 buttons. The top small wheel and the rear large wheel are used (for vertical and horizontal selection) in conjunction with right hand side small button, sounds complex but it isnt. You also have the option of the back button as second focus button (which you can register a different point e.g. off to one side) in addition to focus button at front (normal mode). Not quite sure what you mean about using rear button then the joystick, will have a look on my 50D when I get home, I'm a confirmed centre spot only user on the 50D (as its my wife's camera).
All of the controls on the 1D Mk2 are very odd compared to the ones on the 50D but tbh I prefer the handling of the 1D over the 50D, mind you it might be cos I'm a weirdo

Like Matt says it is a 2 dial job but it is so easy and with minimal practice you wont even move the camera from your face
its one of those things you wont even think about it - quick and easy I move mine all the time while I am shooting and panning along
the autofocus is night v day better than my 40D same with Servo I think the servo on the 40D is pretty poor
but having the 1dmk2N as the main camera I am spoilt and probably expect too much from my 40D

Just want to echo what the others have said.
It's fairly intuitive once you get used to it and I use both 40D / 50D and 1D Mark 2.
Word of warning though - once you've become used to the AF capabilities of the 1D (esp tracking moving subjects in AI Servo) - you might think your 50D is broken when you switch back.

Never having used them, are the xxD's SO SLOW then compared with an old 1Dmk2?
Having a mk2 and a mk3 I find the 2 slow! Don't think I'd ever get on with a xxD series if this is the case.
If you've only experienced pro bodies it's a bit unfair. I certainly wouldn't knock XXD.
Quite a lot changed AF wise between the Mk 2 and Mk 3. Putting the AF Mirror issues of the Mark 3 aside - both still do everything I need AF for.
As for the XXD series - I stopped at a 50D so can't comment on the 60D. In my experience the AF tracking (in challenging situations) is a long way behind Mk3 or Mk2 but I guess it's horses for courses really.
