Has anyone got any experience of using this set up:

1D MK3, 100-400L and 1.4 Teleconvertor teleconvertor fitted?

I understand that this lens set up will autofocus fitted to a 1D albeit at f8. Is the IQ any good?

Thanks - Simon.

It will autofocus albeit centre focus point only.

Not used on 1:3 sensor but have used my 100-400 + 1.4TC combination on both 1:6 and FF sensors - Autofocus hunts a fair bit obviously but IQ seems OK.

I used that setup a while back and the af works on the centre point only. AF is a bit sluggish and the IQ takes a hit but as long as the light is OK and you don't still need to crop into the image then the results aren't bad.

Thanks, but there doesn't seem to be anyone in that thread that has tried the exact set up I'm looking at?

So what is the exact setup?

Here is a comparison of the 100-400L with an without 1.4x, from the-digital-picture.com http://www.the-digital-picture.com/...meraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=7&APIComp=0

IQ holds up pretty well. You can load up and compare all sorts of different lenses and combinations on that site - toggle on the arrow in the centre. It's not an ideal combo, but certainly workable at a push.

I've never used that combination but Canon 1D series cameras will AF at f/8 on the centre point, but they always slow the AF down when an extender is detected. I read a figure of 50% slower, but don't know that for sure. While 50% sounds a lot, an L lens on a 1D should still be pretty quick. I think I'd be wanting to check things like focus tracking on servo, depending on what you shoot. That's going to take a hit.

As mentioned above, 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 + 1.4x TC attached will autofocus on a 1D series camera body, but only with the centre focus point.

It would make the lens f8 because you lose an f-stop as mentioned, the autofocus would be significantly hit and the lens prone to hunt more. IQs shouldn't be effected a great deal however you would have to pick you conditions when you use this setup, especially if your using high shutter speeds, and you might need to stop the lens down further as it might be abit soft wide open

I have not used the mk3 but I did use the mk2 with 1.4 and 100-400 and the results were ok but not fantastic.
