1D mk4 Colour balance

The colour balance on my 1D seems really way off when using flash and flash white balance (I have a 580 and a 430) - its heavily biased towards the yellow end of the spectrum.

I shoot in RAW so correct it when I'm processing but it's a right pain trying to balance against the 1D mk2 my assistant shoots with

even setting a custom white balance doesn't seem to fix it

does anyone else have this - or anyone got any ideas how to tone it down?

My MkIII and MkIV are as close to each other as you could expect. Have you tried applying the colour correction (page 79 in your user manual)?

read the manual????????

good point, maybe I should try that and try and get some consistency out of the camera

thx

I appreciate it's likely to have an adverse effect on your testosterone levels but desperate times call for desperate measures

It'll take a little bit of trial and error but should save you processing time in the long run.

ok, a follow up to this thread I started a while back

Further investigation has just gone and confused me

After playing with my cameras for ages (you can't modify settings in the mk2 to the same extent as the mk4) I've come to the following conclusion... Canon cameras are weird

The white balance built in settings ie cloudy, flash, flourescent etc are actually different values between the cameras

and if I set a specific kelvin value (eg 6500) then ACR tells me that the mk2 actually sets it to 6200 and the mk4 to 6750.

Now is that to be expected - cos it seems to be a large difference, and it also explains why the mk4 seems yellow compared with the mk2's

So, seems to me that I am going to have to set custom balance on each camera in each location to get any consistency (and that will be a pain at weddings) unless someone has a smarter idea?

Buy another 1mk4 ? Otherwise, just set manual for each location at the wedding- should cut down on your processing also.

would be a great idea apart from having to set manual in each location

sometimes you just don't have time

i don't care if its wrong, i'd just like a bit of consistency

I've just set both independently with a white card and the mk4 is significantly more yellow than the mk2 with all settings identical

ah well back to tweaking

and then i've got to get my second shooter over and do his!

1DMkII is from 2004 and I know that at around that time Canon used different standards across their range.

They have since been harmonised, and just guessing from memory I would say probably at about the same time, but maybe that camera was the last pro-spec under the old standard?

hmm, pity as the mk2 is actually more accurate

anyway after several hours i think i have them pretty close, but now need some daylight to see what they look like in real light

then of course i have to do my second shooters, and then my trainee is going to ask what i did etc etc etc
