According to the manual, the 1d MKII sync speed in Av mode is 1/250, but this isn't happening on mine.
The shutter speed stays the same, regardless of wether the flash is attached or not.

I'm sure it's me being think, but I cannot understand this.......

Can anyone enlighten me :)

That would be it then, if you turn off high speed sync it will revert to the sync speed.

Not sure about a 1D mk11 but on my 40D there is a custom function to lock 1/250th for shooting in Av mode.

P.Fn-04 will lock the shutter speed within selected limits (or at one value if the upper and lower selected limits are the same) when using any mode except Bulb

Hi Bob.

Using Av mode.

I haven't got the PC software disk. It that right that p.fn can only be changed on the PC?

Have you got the disk from your 40d?

You can deselect P.Fn's by holding the <Select> button and turning the rear dial until OK is highlighted....then release the <Select> button.

You will need firewire to change those settings, although you can reset them to factory default without firewire connections, which should turn any preset by previous owner(s).
My pc doesnt have firewire but you can get an adapter card.

(too late, nice one Bob)

Nope, that doesn't work.

Doing what you said Bob just changes the function number.

I've downloaded the EOS Utility and that doesn't seem to do much either.
Tried USB and firewire but I don't have the firewire driver at the mo. There only seems to be a driver for Vista......

Have a look on the USA website here the WIA driver i think is for the firewire. You'll need to select XP to get it to show up.

If you continue turning the dial, you should end up on the <Clear all personal functions> tab....releasing the <select> button should bring up the <clear all PFn screen) Then use <select> and the dial to highlight <OK> and then release the <select button>

Edit...see p158 of your manual

Cheers guys, but it just aint happening.

I've reset the p.cfn Bob, but still not working.

Downloaded the driver, but the software still not working.

I give up. Manual mode it is then!

Just checked mine, select aperture in Av and the shutter speed jumps all over the place and gives over/under exposed shots.
Checked the manual and it seems to suggest up to 1/250th is for non Canon guns. Seems to me you only get E-TTL when in manual mode with a 550ex anyway.
Manual also mentions CF3, there isnt one on the rear menu option.
