I currently have a 40D and wish to upgrade the body for a better AF for motor sports and aircraft shots along with a faster frames per second option.

I have a dilema over either a second hand 1D iii or a new 7D both of which are in my budget.

I have a feeling the 1D shades it as a better performer on all counts although it would be second hand as opposed to a new 7D

Any comments or views?

1Diii

Amazing build and performance - the 10mp sensor is amazing - step change up from my old 50D sensor.

remember the 1d is only a 1.3 crop as opposed to the 1.6, do you find now you are allready maxing out your reach when you need it most?

1ds are great though, im currently hoping someone puts a mkIII up for sale at a decent price soon.

To add to my earlier comments - you often read 'glass over body' type comments implying that all bodies have the capability for good shots but only with the right glass.

I was staggered by how sharp and punchy the pictures are from my 1DMkiii - I know lenses are important but I'd clearly underestimated the part of the body. I had previously used 300D, 5D, 30D 40D and 50D. Ultimately the very best of those is the 5D but the raw files from the 1DMkiii come straight out of the camera crisp and with lovely colours.(and with a certain feel I don't get from my other cameras)

I'm sure the 7D is a decent bit of kit and I have played with one a little. The 1DMkiii is simply superb.

One word of caution - if you get a 1DMkiii you need to read some advice on the web regarding setting up the AF for best servo accuracy - slowing the tracking speed down seems to optimise the accuracy for most purposes.
