Have any of you tried C.Fn III-8:3?

Expand AF points to all 45 points? Does it work with keeping the tracking of a moving object? I'm thinking specifically about sports really here...but anyone who tracks quite fast moving objects might be able to shed some light on it!!

It seems this is a difference between the mkIII and the mkIV in terms of AF Assist...and if anyone's tried it, I'd be interested to see if it works!

No-one?!

No-one's tried this?!!? I know some of you have mkIV's...don't make me come over there.

I don't have a 1Div but I would suspect that it will be the same as the 50D etc when all points are made active with A1 servo. It will depend what you are shooting. If there are any obstructions (eg; fences at showjumping) the focus points will lock onto the fence.

You might be ok with footbal as there are no interferences as such, possibly the ref, in the middle of a pitch during a game.

It will be interesting to here from someone, eg KIPAX, to see if they have tried it in the field.

Hi James, i tried it on my old MK3 and MK4 and for me personally it didnt work, the Canon AF is too jumpy and anything else coming into the frame steals the focus unless using centre point and limited or no expansion.

Now of course if you were a Nikon shooter!!!!!!!

James I'm getting a free hire of a MKIV this weekend, and looking for things to try, I'll put it on my list. I was hoping to be at Wembley tomorrow for FA Cup final, but the agency have discovered some new FA/Wembley licence issues :(

I'll certainly be out at Brands on Sunday to shoot some bike racing, and will deffo try it then.

Hi James I have the MK1V and am still getting used to it,I would use all the 45 points when tracking bird in flight if there was an uncluttered sky,so it really does depend on what you are photographing, because like someone said it would keep locking on to other things if there is a cluttered background.Try the surrounding points first which is what I have used a lot,the left right points would be good at for eg tennis where you are shooting at more horizonal shots.

Kaz, that's really helpful...I suspected if you adjust C.Fn III-2 to "intermediate slow" (ie. setting 2) and C.Fn III-4 to setting 1 (Continuous AF Priority) you would be able to minimise the chances of focus shifting when you get an obstruction?!

Though I'm not sure how much i'd trust C.Fn III-4 to hold focus, presumably it relies on you tracking it for a bit?!

Yeah, I may have made the crucial mistake to looking at the D3/D3s and being impressed with the 3D AF tracking. Seems to work very well...I looked through the manual of the mkIV and Canon's AF guide and saw these settings and was wondering if they'd do much the same job.
