1D sleeping away the battery

When I got my 1D, the batteries it came with were completely useless, most (there were 5 of them!) giving only 1-5 shots  So I got a pair of third party batteries which were recommended.

But the 1D seems to KILL the new batteries if I leave it turned on. I have the auto-off at 8 minutes but it somehow manages to suck a battery dry in 1-2 days if not turned off! And I never turn my cameras off unless they go in a bag, my 400D, 40D and 7D seem to happily sleep for weeks it seems.

Bad battery, just have to live with it or a setting I missed?

I don't know what the main differences are between the 1Ds and 1D classic (I suspect that the 1Ds classic is actually more similar to the 1D2) but I haven't noticed any battery draining in the couple of days that I did leave it switched on. you've made me curious now, so I think I'll leave it on and see if it drains.

Battery life in the original 1D is supposed to be absolutely terrible - but I still wouldn't mind getting my hands on one, and since I have the charger, I could get a bargain...

1-2 days?
Luxury - when I used the D1x, the batteries would only last about 4 hours on a shoot, less in cold weather.
Like most, I carried 6 batteries per body.

With the EN-EL3 and 4-series, battery life is hugely improved.

It does help if you switch the camera off when it's not in use though...'auto-off' is just standby-mode by another name - it's not altogether off - use the on-off switch for that and remove the batteries from the body when it's put away.
