Without going into all the details of why - I'm after some views on the 1DMKII and in particular how it compares to the 40D.

Looking for a complete all rounder shooting a bit of everything.

I've done the side by sides and know the facts and figures - just keen to get some opinions.

Cheers

I've got both lol.

And use both although I'm a little more inclined to use the 1DII over the 40D for most of the stuff I like to photograph. iso 1600 and 3200 I prefer to use the 40D. Using the 40D is easier than the mkII, in fact for nightclub stuff this is the only reason I don't use the 1dII as I hold a flash in my left hand, making operation of the 1D nigh on impossible. erm... I can't be too specific unless there is a particular aspect you're particularly keen to have someone give an opinion on... If there is anything give me shout.

The MkII is getting very long in the tooth now and you might end up giving envious glances to people with screens larger than a 1st class stamp, folks that can shoot at higher ISO's than you, or those that can crop heavily and still print an A3.

What you won't get with any XXD camera is that special feeling every time the shutter fires on your 1D. They are hewn from ancient granite, engineered beautifully and still have top notch AF speed and accuracy.

I'd happily take on any task with a 1DII.

Thanks guys

I use a gripped 40D at the moment but am considering a used 1DII on the forum.

The 'build' for rough and tumble outdoors plus sealing for our good Scottish weather would be a plus point.

Autofocus - thinking of birds in flight.

Noise handling (a few less MP on bigger sensor)

Small screen I can live with and ans for printing A3 is my normal limit anyway.

I guess to try and be more specific....

Autofocus & noise (a few less MP on bigger sensor) are the two things I'm keen to compare.

Small screen I can live with - A3 is my normal limit anyway.

Autofocus is brilliant.. so much more responsive in AI Servo and faster to nail in One Shot - we're talking low xxx milli seconds difference here but it is definitely noticeable.

Noise... For me the 40D just grabs it for cleaner images at high iso, but the 1D high Iso, hard to explain but the noise look more real, like a fast film!
although A4 and A3 I doubt you'd notice it.

I went from 50d to Mk2n to Mk3, love the pro body although sometime miss being able to travel a bit lighter with the 50d. Remember you only get weather sealing if your lenses support that, and not all Canon's do.

AF speed on the 1 series is the business, To change the settings on the Mk2 is all a two button affair, i.e you cant just press one button to change drive mode etc its a combo of two buttons.

So it would be of benefit for birds in flight - running dogs etc

I dabbled with a 40D for a while before moving to a 1DmkII. Apart from when size/weight is an issue I cannot think of a time when I'd prefer the 40D to a 1D. I was thinking of selling my mkII to upgrade to a mkIII but my mkII is worth way more to me than current prices of around 520+postage. Get some good fast glass so you don't have to go above iso800 too often and a good software package to denoise and sharpen the shots (1D shots seem to take a lot more sharpening than xD or xxD bodies) and you are away.

oh yeah... that's the other thing... default jpeg conversions on the 1d2 are garbage... I was going furious when I first got mine and looked at the jpegs I thought the camera had a focus issue - then looked at the raws and realised everything was fine - just bung the sharpness to max and the contrast up a touch and you're on to a winner.

the mkiin does a much better job in that respect.

I got my 40D really only for macro. The 1D Mk2 is too annoying for macro but brilliant at birds in flight or really anything that might move suddenly. The auto focus is awsome.
I'm not too impressed with the JPEG quality on the 2D but then it does take an SD card as well to back up any RAW files you are shooting as JPEGS.

Thanks for all the help folks.

At some point soonish I'm going full frame for my landscapes (probably 5DII) and wanted something that didn't break the bank but would keep me OK for some faster action.
