Im trying to set custom function I 13 "Set aperture value range"

It looks like it only allows you set it in 1 stop increments :thinking: is this correct? im sure i read somewhere you could have it in 1/2 or 1/3 increments. I've looked through the Custom function section of the manual but found nowt :bang:

What are you planning on setting it on, and why?

Are you planning on limiting the minimum aperture setting to reduce the risk of diffraction?
 
im trying to set the camera so that i can use CFn I 13 and combine it with ISO safety shift. so that i can limit the aperture range whilst the shutter speed is set to a constant. Then the camera will bump the ISO up and down for me.
 
Mine are full stops as well, can't see any way of changing it.

When the lighting is extreme, I'll use Shutter priority mode, set the speed I want to something like 1/800th, and use the "set aperture value range" custom function (C-Fn 1-13) to 2.8-3.5. I'll also have the ISO safety shift set ON, and set the ISO to 100.

What then happens is that the aperture is always forced open to get the nice blurry background, the shutter is forced to a nice range to freeze the action, and if you go into a shady area, the camera automatically bumps the ISO up for you.

There are two perils with this approach:

1) It's so bright that the shutter speed you've chosen is still too slow at ISO 100 - if so jiggle the shutter speed up a bit but watch the ISO in the shadows, aor alternatively bump the aperture to 4 or 5.6 to allow the lens to close down a bit more.
2) You need to watch what you are metering so that if you are focused on a player against a shaded grandstand in the background, the camera will overexpose the player unless you've got spot metering on the focus point or centre weighted average if you are using the centre focus point.

Otherwise, it works really well to handle those nasty bright/shade locations.

I've set the iso range already its the Aperture increment i want to change in CFn I 13 because i can only get it to change by full stops eg f/4 to f/2.8

Just clarify i am trying to set it up so that in Custom Function I 13 "set aperture value range" i want to have it limited from F/2 to F/3.5 but it only seems to go F/2 F/2.8 F/4 :shrug:

Then you have cf-1 set to full stops.
 
no i don't i've tried it on all three settings in CFn 1 O = 1/3 STOP wont work 1 = 1 Stop works 2 = 1/2 stop doesnt work arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh
 
My 1D3 is the same. It's a needless limitation but it's there and that's that.

You should see the useless range on offer if you want to restrict shutter speeds. e.g. the fastest minimum shutter speed you can set is 1/60. What possible use is that when shooting with a 400mm lens? There is no need to implement such a great feature and then hamstring it so much that it is near worthless, yet that's what Canon has chosen to do.:bang:
 
so how has tobers managed to limit his between f/2.8 and f/3.5 :shrug: but your right about the shutter speed limit aswell. Making me wish i had the money to switch to Nikon :bang:
 
i've sent a PM so hopefully i'll get a reply :) to be honest f/2.8 to f/4 wont be that bad, just frustrating that something that looks like it should work doesn't. the shutter speed limit is ridiculous though, i really hope they've sorted that for the MKIV
 
Howdy. Sorry - got to fess up here as my camera only does 2.8 - 4.0 etc as well and doesn't go to 3.5 at all. Cant for the life of me think why I thought it did and wrote 3.5 other than being a pillock and not actually checking what I was writing about.

Aside from that, it's a handy function to use in very varied lighting situations.
