I am thinking about what I should not be thinking right now . One lighter body for traveling would be helpful

I would like to hear from both camera owners. I am particularly interested in these areas:

  • IQ
  • sensor cleanliness
  • AF issues
  • Weather-sealing and any related failures (frequent use by the coastline or mountains)
Waiting for 5D mk3 might be the sensible way, but let's hear some opinions!

Very interested in this too.

Although with the stuff i increasingly find myself doing i am looking to shift my mk3 for a 5D2 and keep the 1Ds.

Seen a blog on some guy that does Artic and Antartic wildlife expeditions, he has pictures of his 7d and 5d covered in snow @ -30deg. He did comment that it might not survive a brief dunk in sea water as his 1d3 had done but he was impressed!

The 5Dmkii has a definte edge in low light situations, at anything above iso800 the 5D will have a clear advantage in noise. Overall image quality is very similar between the two cameras, at lower ISOs I don't think there is anything to choose between them. The 1Ds has much better AF, in terms of speed, acuracy and the number of AF points (the outer ones are much more use on the 1D). The sensor cleaning system in the 5D will help but it won't stop all dust issues... but it will need cleaning less than the 1Ds does. As for weather sealing I wouldn't trust a 5D in heavy rain but I'd be confident that the 1Ds would cope without an issue.

5D2 wins quite comfortably on image quality (it's marginally better than the 1Ds3) but not on anything else except size.

On the other hand, the 5D3, or whatever they call it, is going to be sensational - a super 7D with a 30+ mp low-noise full frame sensor, and all the trimmings. We're in for a real treat  but I think it'll cost a bit and who knows when

That's not very helpful is it!

While I have not used the 1DsII, the 5DII offers a higher resolution ( 21.1 vs 16.6 MP ) and an extra stop on the light front. The 1DsII does have a better AF system but I think you can use the 5DII quite happily once you've tweaked around in Customs Functions. The 1DsII is better built though and is weather-sealed while the 5DII isn't.

The 5DII does offer more in a lighter package which I gather is one of your preferred criteria. For me the extra stop at ISO6400 makes a big difference.

Whether you should be thinking of one right now or wait another year for the 5DIII is up to you. Given that there will have been three years between the introduction of the two models, much is expected of the latter.

Cheers

I hope it will not inherit the 7D noise, otherwise the choice is easy

The 1DsII is in a different league for AF so if you need good AF then that's the one to have.

The 5DII has good resolution for sure but with that comes bigger files and it all depends what you want to do with those files whether resolution is a priority for you.

If you are not printing big or cropping heavily then you are simply wasting hard drive space. I can see the point in 30MP for studio use and commercial but is 25-30MP really any use to people who only print to A4 or keep files digitally?

I have a wedding photography colleague who shoots on a 5DII but on export from lightroom resizes files to 12 inches longest side because that is as big as he really needs.

So ask yourself what you want to do with the files and if AF or an extra stop of light is worth it. :)

Hope it's not going to be 30+mp! My 1ds mk3 is overkill for 99% of uses and I can't imagine many social photographers requiring more megapixels.

I'd go for the 5dmk2 as it's got better dust control. I used to use a 1ds mk1 and tried never to use it at F11 or smaller as I'd then have to spend 10 minutes per file cleaning the dust spots.

That. My landscapes normally need f/16 and high resolution.

The other problem is the old fashioned batteries that hold little charge compared to even 3rd party 40D batteries. I want to take it to France next week, but probably will take 1D mk3 instead.

well personally think you made the wrong decision

5dmkII 21.5 mill res not high enough for u
fair enough some are dust magnets but not all I have a battery grip not a cannon one but use canon batteries they last for ages even a lot longer than my 40d in the type of same set up

You'll not get anywhere near 21mp resolution at f/16. I don't know what the 'real world' diffraction limited res is at that aperture off hand, but if you pixel peep with your 1Ds2 you'll see micro-detail starting to go off at f/11 - if you look very carefully - so the 5D2 will get you no more than you already have.

Don't worry... that is the last thing I am thinking about right now. 16mp does deliver very nice A2s, and I can get plenty out of 10mp. At f/16 on ff they still look pretty sharp and only need very slight sharpening to bring them in line with f/11 shots.

My real problem is dust. I really dread shooting at f16+ now, however it is a must to have everything in focus from 0.5m all the way to infinity.

I don't really care about weak batteries in Clevedon, but I may be in a different situation in the Alps, depending on the proximity of the mighty electric socket.

Arctic Butterfly sounds like a cheaper solution :D

Have you treid the Canon auto dust cloning thing in DPP?

Arctic Butterfly sounds like a cheaper solution :D

Do you use them? Are they 100% effective even with the older Canons?

I just tried my last 2 Visible dust swabs and smeared my sensor particularly well :bang:. Then came LensPen sensorklear - it took out must gunk but corners are still disgusting. It physically can't go in there flat on the surface. It looks like a yet another £35 job.

So, I am taking 1D mkIII to France in the morning.

I am now really considering swapping Ds to 5DII just for that single but bloody annoying reason.

I have an Arctic Butterfly but TBH I've never used it! So far I've got by with just the on board sensor cleaning and a carefully aimed rocket blower.

However, I believe they are effective (obviously :D ) and I don't really see how they can't be. We're only talking about tiny particles held on by nothing more than static. How hard can it be?

Thanks. That could be a strong case for 5D then.

1Ds mkII doesn't have special fluorinated hydrophobic sensor coatings found in all later cameras. So all grime can stick to the green thing and it may be hard to shift, hence smearing.

I would really like to know what sensor cleaning method is the most effective with 1Ds pre mkIII. The shop can get it very clean, but they won't tell me

I've used an Arctic butterfly for the past few years, never had a problem and loads better than the wet way I used to use.
