Hello

Im thinking of dabbling in the world of FF to give me a wider option in a 2body setup.

I have a 1dii and a 40d. I love the handling and build of the 1d so a natural 2nd body would be the 1dsii, although i get on with the 40d quite well too lol.

The 5d can be had for a good bit less than the 1dsii and ive seen many amazing shots with it.

How do the higher ISOs, colour reproduction and tones, compare on both camera?

I know the 1Ds is better built with much better AF etc, but disregarding this would the 1d produce a similar image to the 5d? (i think you can almost spot a 5d image without knowing the camera if that makes sense??)

I had the 5d for a couple of years and then bought a 1ds mk2. Never used the 5d again and recently sold it.

Have a look at susies 1ds she has for sale on here

If you're buying purely on the strength of the file quality, I'd say the 5 wins hands down. The quality vs price makes it a great option, unless you need the bigger file size of the 1Ds II.

Once you bring the feel and overall quality of the body into the equation, the waters get very muddy. It's really down to personal taste and how much you value camera feel. The 1 series are amazing to work with.

what about the 1ds MKII vs the 5D MKii - once you discount the movie capability - where would you put your money

I have had both bodies too and while the 5D is an amazing camera it is not as good as the 1Ds2 in any area whatsoever.

I have no experience of the 5DII but the 1DsII gives me everything I think I need in the image quality department. For me, gaining 25% more pixels isn't enough to lose AF performance and ruggedness

Thats the sort of info i was hoping to get :D

I fear a 1ds2 may be the way to go :( lol. Just need to find one at the right money.
By all account the 1ds is a cracking tool but id prefer the mkii for newer electronics and vastly improved battery life :)

I wouldn't agree with this. I have no camera that can match the image quality of the 1DsII. I've had a 5D and prefer the files from the Ds

I tend to look at these things in terms of value. How much extra does the 1DsII cost and what extra percentage improvement in IQ do you get?

lol

I have both too and use them both for slightly different tasks. I use the 5D for shooting off camera at a wedding (1st dance is a good example) I can easily handle the 5D one handed for that. The 1Ds is a bit of a brute for that and if I'm shooting lighter, i.e one camera and a couple of lenses in a crumpler then the 5D comes out to play.

For almost anything else the AF and ease of use in portrait mode sees the 1Ds in my little mitts.

So for me, it actually more a case of ergonomics :)

Except you said "If you're buying purely on the strength of the file quality, I'd say the 5 wins hands down"

which is what I was challenging. Value to an individual is a very different issue.

Having said that, I don't know how much a 5D costs now but I picked up a 1DsII on here for £1000 the other day. Since MkIII cost around £3k used, I'd say its the bargain of the century right now.

That is stonking value. The hands down comment is perhaps not as clear as I should have made it. That was really in terms of what you get for your ££'s in IQ.

The differences in file quality between these two cameras has been a debating point since they were first side by side and it's still not exactly conclusive one way or the other.

Watch out for the U turn.......If there are 1Ds II's out there for a grand though, I'd take that over the 5D 8 days of the week.

what does the improved AF result in, other than more points, is it speed therefor you don't miss the shot, or does it focus more accyuratly - ie you 85mm ans 1.2 is going to be sharper in the sweet spot

It's speed as well as the way it holds that AF. The 1D focus tracking is stunning, because it has so many more points it can "pass" the focus from point to point with superb accuracy. It get's my whippet head on no problem and the 5D won't even focus on her. :)
