1ds2 vs 5d2

if the DSII screen is like the mkIIn its not bad (i know its a bit smaller), its not as bright as my mkIII though so i would suspect you may find it weird next to the 5d II as id imagine that has a decent screen being a new body.

DSIII i still think will hold big ££££ for quite a while.

in my 1d thread someone said that the ds has worse high iso noise than the normal D
 
I'm considering the move because of the AF

IQ is the most important thing, if I lose it I won't go,

high iso noise is a problem sometimes for me but I think a 1ds4 is the only way to improve this but I'm hoping a 1ds3 can match it or at least come close

I have only used video playing tbh

AF on 1Ds2 is great, but there is no microadjustment feature. If any of your lenses are 'off' this could be an issue. I need to sort out one of mine.

The screen is OK, but to be fair you won't be using it much. 2" is very small compared to 5d2 screen, and the resolution is low-ish.

I had a play with 5D2 before and could tell that it wins in the high ISO comparison. 1Ds2 will have clearly more noise at ISO1600, but still usable to 3200 if well exposed. This would be OK for weddings when not so good image is better than no image. Notably, AF performance really drops down in very low light.

If you mainly do landscapes or shoot static subject stay with 5D. Liveview with ND filters is invaluable - and I miss it! Also, there is no sensor cleaning and anti-dust coating in 1Ds2. For anything more dynamic or in harmful conditions 1Ds holds its own. 1Ds3 >> 5D2 in all aspects minus video and price, so keep that in mind.

that is a very kind offer which I might take you up on a trade for beer/coffee. I'm basically settled on holding off until the 1ds4 comes out and buying a 1ds3 when it falls

That compromise between AF performance and high ISO is EXACTLY the reason I moved to Nikon. I had the 1DsII and a 5D, looked at upgrading the 5D to a 5DII but that would have left me with great AF in on body and great high ISO in the other. Not ideal.

So I got the D700, which has both. 51 point AF, FF body with high ISO. Job's a good un. :)
 
You can always have a look at my 1Ds3. I am in Exeter usually one day a week (not through choice though!) I am up there on business Wednesday until 2pm so if you wanted a quick meet after that i could be available!

The 1Ds3 is not as good over 1600 ISO as the 5DMk2 and H on the 1Ds3 is only 3200 ISO but I think the lower ISOs are a bit better. Better AF, build and for me the feel of the 1Ds3 is the thing. If you want high ISO IQ stick with the 5DMk2 and start saving for a 1Ds4.

I'll be perfectly honest, if it wasn't for the loss of my 24 TSE MkII which Nikon don't have I would be buying a D700 like a shot!
 
hmmm I'm thinking to make my second body a 1d3 and see where I go from there.

I did consider the nikon thing but I'd lose some of the work I do with a friend as he's cps sponsored. That and I'd need to sell up all in one and lose the backups I have from friends which are dead nice to have.
 
I just wish that Canon had produced the equivalent of the D700, I would not have moved if they had but the AF in the 5DII is mince compared to the 51 point Af that I had got used to in the 1Ds.
 
I still prefer my 1Ds MkII over the 5D MkII when pushed the 1Ds still gives me the results. If I was now looking again I would actually go for the 1D MkIV. Used these a couple of times recently & overall these I feel out perform all the others. Yes you do drop to 1.3 sensor against FF but speed of focus, focus points, image rate & quality at high ISO just blows away anything Canon have produced so far.
 
I think a 1DS II would be a step backwards from a 5D II, they are similar kinds of camera , but the 1DS II is over 5 years old, and it's showing it's age, although capable of producing stunning images if the conditions are right.

It would make more sense (IMO) if you are looking for better AF performance, would be to go for the 1DS III, excellent af with good high ISO performance, and like all canon pro bodies built like a tank.

aye I am but with a few months for the 1ds4 release to drop prices and so I can build funds
