1st dslr canon 1000d or sony a200???? help needed

ok so im saving up at the mo for my first dslr (currently have fuji s5700) i can only afford an entry level model and do want to buy new.

I was rather drawn to the canon 1000d kit at £400 new, then in currys today i saw the sony a200 kit at £300 new and quite liked the look of it so when i got home i started looking at all the reviews on the net and im even more confused now :thinking:

I have a bit of time to decide as im still saving but just wondered if any one has either of these cameras and can give me your views on the one to go for, now i know its all about personal taste but any feedback to help me decide would great.

Also im not into any one kind of photography at the mo (noob :D) i like anything from close-up to landscape and anything inbetween.

Visit a shop and hold them and find out how comfortable they feel.
Of course as a 450D owner I am going to be biased and suggest save up a bit more and go for the 450D over the 1000D as I believe it's worth it.
You won't get one lens to cover all types of photography, and you will end up spending a lot more on lenses that the body itself but start with a kit lens and work your way up :)
 
i use a sony a200 and take all different types of pics,i'm new too but do believe that the pics come out in very good quality. obviously there are better cameras but who can afford them at this level? its light and comfortable imho but it is upto personal choice.ive taken pictures up against the more expensive cameras in my photo club and mine are the best! so its in the eye of urself and not the camera really.or it could be ****** uses ps or similar to edit. anyway i like it and hope you do if you get one, quite user friendly too. good luck :)
 
Hold both cameras.

My friend has an a200 but i found it to big & i knew my fingers would ache
after not too long.

I chose my 450d as it felt comfortable :thumbs:

i muse admit i am rather liking the canons they just seem like quality kit and have alot of dedicated fans.

i definitely agree with what you say about lenses and think i will prob end up buying quite a few over time with a wide range of photography intrests.

youve got me thinking more now about saving the extra and going the 450d route lol

is that a good body to stick with for a while because i wont be able to upgrade for quite some time, all the savings after the buying of a body will be spent on lenses lol:naughty:
 
ah another 450d user snoop69, thanks for the input my hands are not all that large and the canons do look more comfortable like you say il have to hold them but i am thinking canon, its mainly the amazingly cheap price of the sony thats apealing, but as always i quesse you get what you pay for?
 
ok so heres a good one, im quite lazy really and am not into pp YET lol and am wondering which will have the best jpeg image i heard the canons can be a touch soft but is this noticable in the real world.

jason you sound v happy with your a200 and ive heard a few say they are too its such a hard choice, cameras are a big investment and no one wants to get it wrong lol
 
Where in the South East you from?

More than happy to pop round & have a look/try of the Canon.

With the Canon you have a few more lens options than with the Sony
i believe & like you say, there are many users which means lenses etc
are readily available new or used at great prices.
 
im quite a way from dover snoop all the way over in west sussex lol thanks for the offer you all seem so friendly on here.

yes the future is definitely something i need to keep in mind with the lenses i intend to keep the camra for some time.

i have seen quite cheap second hand 350d's on ebay but that seems like quite a gamble????
 
I personally think that if you go with the Sony you are limiting the lenses you can get easily. there are many many canon used lenses and 3rd pary glass to fit the EOS mount I think you MIGHT find it harder to find used glass for the Sony.. I could be wrong, that is only my opinion. both cameras are good.
 
there are plenty of new & used lenses available for Sony Alphas (remember all Minolta AF lenses will fit) & all of them will be stabilised on an Alpha.
Yes, in ultimate nos. there are fewer s/h but there are also fewer people looking for them so it evens out.
 
The other thing to remember is Sony bodies have image stabilisation in built, where as Canon and Nikon have them on some of there lenses - there is a debate and mixed opinion which version (body or lens) is the better! I'm a Canon fan, father-in-law has the Minolta body (pre Sony) and will be certain, whichever you choose, you will be pleased with. :thumbs:
 
I have the 1000d and cant fault it, i was also considering the a200 when getting mine, ended with the canon after trying both but mine was more down to the canon name being more known to me inthe camera world than sony plus the gf wouldnt let me get the sony :lol:
 
1000 d here as well , more than happy with it , but as said above you need to handle them all including the nikon D60 , i only went with the canaon as it felt the most comfortable :)
