Just getting into the world of photography and know nothing!!!

I brought a Nikon d90 yesterday and I am utterly amazed by the amount of features and buttons etc.

What does all this mean? what is an f number? What is ISO? etc etc

I am in the process of finding a course to go on to get the best out of it but on first impressions I think i am going to enjoy it!!!!
 
Learn the manual! A lot of people (myself included) think you can just learn anything without having to resort to the official documentation but it's indispensable for DSLRs if you're a newbie.

:agree: Read the manual, have a play, then read the manual again, most of all, have lots of fun!
The nikon software is useful, but slow, get to grips with the photos first then look at different software for what ever it is you want to do with the photos later.

yes alot of people (myself included) have all RTFM, its the best way to learn your camera. i would also go to a local library or even google to read up on three key things; aperture, shutter and ISO.
 
Ok read manual, although sometimes they are a pain, if your not getting on with it try this book HERE, i have his D300 and D700 books, which are very good and a lot more easier to understand than the manual, and also explains a lot more about your camera, next if your new to DSLRs try shooting in P mode for a little while, a bit like automatic, but still gives you some control over the camera ie ISO, +/- exposure gain, next get out enjoy and have fun, then post up your results, you have one of Nikon's finest cameras, enjoy it :)

I have the Magic lantern D90 dvd and its very helpful...

The manual actually sums things up pretty nicely I think, move onto some other books or guides once you understand the basics from the manual.

The D90 is great place to start with DSLR photography, IMO, as it has all of the automation of a point & squirt, but also has some very advanced manual settings too, which one can 'grow into' over a period of time :thumbs:.
 
I can only agree with the above posts, read the manual, but if you're like me, a person who can't sit down with a book for hours on end...... Have a play :D

here's how I started

1. first few shots, done in Auto mode

2. got a bit more comfortable with the controls, so I put it in A (aperture priority) for a few months

3. now I'm in full manual mode M, still use A for some shots though
