I find the raynox is best used with flash and the aperture around f11-16 keep at it and you will get used to it I'm sure.
 
Lovely colouring and you're right,, I have the Raynox DCR150, & 250 and they are a bugger to focus.
However.. the F4 that you have used is really not enough for a good depth of field.

You will need to shut it right down (F22 or similar) and use a tripod for the ensuing long shutter speed.

Anything thats getting that close is going to be a bugger to focus, even the slightest movement will put it oof. but as said above shut it down and try using a flash, I dont think any of my shots above 2x have been done without flash.
