Okay, I'm finding my way around the D3 now. I shoot in AP mode a lot, but on Canon aperture once set is static. On the D3 it seems to move up and down a little. Why is this so?

No idea, in AP mode the aperture stays set. Could it be If your lens a is not a fixed aperture lens? Like some zooms.

I think it was because it's a macro lens? Buggered if I know - all my lenses are fixed aperture.

The Nikkor 105 macro behaves that way, depending on the focusing distance.

Nikon bodies report the change in effective aperture that takes place with all macro lenses.

This change was happening with your old canon macro lens, the canon bodies just report the actual aperture instead of the effective aperture.

Effective aperture = actual aperture + (actual aperture x ratio)

So to actually get f/8 at 1:1, you need to set f/16
