Hi everyone
Sorry about starting another camera buying thread but I am looking for some advice on what to buy.

I have always had an interest in taking photographs and decided before Christmas 2009 that I would like to take this further so applied for an evening course at college. I started An Introduction to Digital Photography course last night and pretty much everyone there apart from myself and another guy had an SLR camera.

I do not really know a great deal about these camera's as I have always owned a point and shoot, which I love, but as I would like to take my hobby a little further I decided when I got accepted for the course I wanted an SLR and after last night I realised that I may be at a disadvantage with just having my little camera.

I have been reading these forums for a while and I took some advice and went into Jessop's and handled quite a few SLR's and I think I would like to get the Canon 450D or 500D as I liked the feel of both of both when I held them. However at this point do I just go for the camera with lens or do I go for one of the offers that they have like this one http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/77436/show.html or this one http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/77221/show.html

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Would it be worth thinking about buying second hand to get you started? That way you can get a feel for what type of photographs you want to take and get used to the equipment without fear of wasting to much money. There's some really good second hand stuff around if you keep your eyes open :-).

Thanks guys
I will have a look around and see what offers are available.

If you are after new, camera price buster is worth a look for price comparisons

If you don't want video function, the 450D is probably a better bet and you could put the difference towards another lens - can also use it for comparisons on lens prices as well.

Good luck with your search

The 2 links in your initial post are the same item for me ?

Personnaly, I wouldn't go for the 75-300 lens, I'd go for the 450D with 18-55IS lens then buy the 55-250IS lens - very highly rated, around the £200 mark - try 'Kerso' on here to see if he can supply the lens and at what price.

Cheers

Second hand is a good idea, but I would still suggest going to some shops and actually holding the different cameras (you might find second hand versions of older models at a London Camera Exchange).

Some cameras feel right others just don't, its not a brand thing just personal preference.

I have been looking on Ebay and stumbled on the canon outlet. I have bidding for a couple of cameras but have been out bid so far. I will keep trying though!!

Thanks for the advice I have asked Kerso for a lens list and as I have said above I am looking at ebay at the moment at the canon outlet and a couple of other cameras there - I keep missing out on the cameras I can afford, in the classified section on here.

Gem, The 450d is a great camera. I'd start with the 18-55mm lens and then at some point consider the 55-250mm as mentioned before if you feel the need to get closer or prhaps the 50mm f1.8 for low light and or portraits.

Take care on Ebay to avoid cameras sent from abroad because of potential import duties.
lot's of my clients have been very pleased with deals from Digigoods on ebay, although yiu rely on their warranty than the Canon one.

Avoid any Jessops offers with long non-IS zooms bundled in.

Hi everyone
Thought I would update my DSLR buying saga!!

I have been bidding and have been outbid on several camera's so far but have come across a Canon 450D with both a 18-55mm and 55-200mm lens for £450. The seller has 100% positive feedback, and according to the listing the camera has been used only once from new.

Could someone please advise if this is a good price?

Hi All
Thought I would update again.
I am now the proud owner of a Canon 450D. :D

I spoke to a photographer friend about the camera I saw on ebay, she said it may be better to leave it and the more I thought, the more of a bad feeling I had about it. SO I went for a new one.

I bought my camera from Jessops and it is the display model as the 450D is being discontinued and the only one left in any Jessops store in the area. I managed to get a free 4GB SD card and a half price Lowpro bag. Already sent off my claim for my £30 cashback as well :)

I have spent this afternoon reading the manual and being quite confused!! Will be out and about tomorrow taking Photo's as I have a homework assignment from College that is due this week.

Finally I would like to say :thankyou: to everyone who has posted on this thread and given me advice. It has been very much appreciated.
