Yes
I love my 17-85 as its the perfect walkabout lens albeit a little slow sometimes but its just started to develop and err01 fault so i'm looking at other options.

What options do I have?

Canon EF-S 17-55mm is the only f2.8 EFS lens but it aint cheap. I think Sigma do a 17-70 f2.8

Another vote for the 17-55/2.8.. Tamron does a pretty good 17-50/2.8 for a third of the price, but get the non-VC version.

15-85 for similar range but much sharper than the 17-85....

Still slow though....

Hmm cheers fella's, I got quoted £160 to service the 17-85, but I think i'll be putting that money towards another lens and sell it for spares or repair

Have you tried cleaning the lens contacts? And the camera too? With a rubber/eraser. A greasy finger mark in the wrong place can sometimes cause the Err thing.

If not that, 17-55 2.8 IS is a fab lens :)

Yeah tried it all, the lens works fine so long as you have it at the lowest apature whatever the zoom but if I change it at all I get the error.

I was in a similar position where my 'walkabout' lens wasn't fast enough and I was having to use the built-in flash a lot of the time which wasn't what I wanted. I considered the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 but the price is offputting as is the need to spend more on the hood.

Instead I bought the new Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 and have ben very impressed with it. I hadn't considered 3rd party lenses before but this has opened my eyes...even my wife, who is secptical of these things, has commented how my pictures are more 'sharp and colourful and almost 3D'. The Sigma is a solid piece of kit and is very fast and quiet to focus. Unlike the Canon it comes with a lens hood, case and 3 year UK gaurrantee.

Cheers for the recommendation, I'll have a look at the Sigma, I already have a sigma zoom and it really is stunning lens for the money.

+1 for the tamron 17-50 f2.8 non VC, can be picked up for around £299 at the moment, nice to use and sharp as a razor.

+1 tamron non vc

if money is not an issue then +1 to the canon 17-55 2.8
