2 macro lenses

The 50mm macro is a dedicated prime macro lens, (and probably one of the worst product shots Ive ever seen :lol:)

the 70-300mm just has a macro switch.

I would say for me any way 50mm is far to close for a working distance for insects macro, OK for stuff that aint going to move

above 100mm is about right, Im getting a sigma 105mm macro fab lens Clicky Linky
 
yeah he wants to take alot of insects pics

so if it says 50mm of 100mm ect does that mean how far you have to have the lens from the insect

he has only got about 200-£250 to spend on a macro lens and doesnt know what to get

would the other lens be ok for taken pics of people reasonably close and thing like farm buildings that are further away

in total he says he got 300-£350 and wants a decent macro and a kind of all rounder

Actually I don't think that the Canon 50mm f2.5 is a true 1:1 macro. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think that you need a 1:1 converter to turn it into a true 1:1 macro.

I have one and it's a lovely lens if of an older design. It is physically quite slow to focus and extends a lot but on the plus side some think that it's one of Canons sharpest lenses. I do think that it's a nice lens but the speed of operation could be an issue and therefore a more modern design could be a better option.

PS. I've just checked and it's 1:2, with the "optional life size converter" it's between 1:4 and 1:1.

Of course but it's not a zoom lens, it's a fixed length only but it can be used for... portraits... or anything that you'd use a zoom lens at that zoom length for.
 
Welcome.

You might want to check out the Tamron 90mm f2.8 as it's well thought of and maybe a bit cheaper than the Sigma 105mm.

No, this is the focal length of the lens. What your thinking of is the minimum focusing distance, which is always a consideration when buying a macro. The Tamron 70-300 for instance has a mfd of around 1.2 meters which can be a hindrance when trying to photograph insects.
