200mm or 300mm Lens?

Am looking into buying a Can D500 or Nikon D5000 Kit at jessops(best place?)
Both are offering the Tamaron 70-300 at a reduced rate.
Im thinking this may be a bit longer than I need and a little bulky so maybe a 200mm is enough?also should I ignore the kit deals,just buy the standard lens and buy a same make lens when I fill my piggy bank again?

Tamron 70-300 isn't a brilliant lens, but its cheap and a starter lens.

Cheers for the link.Am looking for a zoom for general shots whilst out and about.Landscape also.
I use to have a 70-200 with an old 35mm SLR and that seemed to fit the bill.
The Canon 55-250 looks good if I go for the 500D.

I understand the the 55-250IS is a much better lens than the 70-300
