Hi all

I have been considering upgrading my 20D. My thoughts are either a 40D or 50D

What i want to know is what are the added benefits of the 50D over the 40D?

Just wondering if there's anything about the 50D that makes it worth the extra cost (i would be buying 2nd hand)

I mainly do Motorsport and Aircraft photography :)

Cheers, Tom

The biggest advantage of 50D over 40D is focus micro-adjust feature (if the lens+body combination is less than perfect - I know this pain), and more MP for cropping. Motorsport photography may benefit from these, however 40D can be had cheaper and should do a good job with a good technique.

Added benefits over the 50d you say? Well not a great deal in my opinion, like mentioned above the micro adjustment and also people rave about the higher res screen, but in my opinion that doesnt justify the extra cost, the 40d has quicker fps than the 50d and you can buy for alot cheaper, i upgraded to the 40d 2 mnths ago and its the best thing ive ever done, if i were you id get a 40d and put the extra cash you have to good glass.........

The question I would ask is why do you want to upgrade, is there something lacking from the 20D that you think you need, (is it the autofocus performance?, the burst capability?, is it the ISO performance above 800?, is it the extra mega pixels so you can crop in more?), what lenses are you using with the 20D, perhaps its not the camera but the lenses.

I still happy use my 20D as a backup body and still getting great images. Ok my main body is a 1D MKII, but I've also invested in a series of very good lenses.

The screen on either one will be a massive improvement over the 20D (1.8" 118,000).
FPS between 40D and 50D is very similar, put it this way, if you shoot for 5 seconds continuously you will have just one more frame with the 40D.

Either one will be a great camera, a pleasure to use.

Actually fps is the same; Canon put a wrong value for 40D for marketing reasons. I don't have a link to the reference, but it should be easy to find.

And 40D screen is useless for reviewing. It has low res, and only uses thumbnails, which makes it impossible to confirm focus.

I haven't owned a 40d but I went from a 20d to a 50d back along and the difference is huge, you won't be disappointed (which ever you choose) I'm sure!

One of the biggest improvements, as said above, is the LCD screen.

Thankyou everyone for your replies!

Well one thing I'm looking for is better ISO performance, better autofocus is always going to be an advantage, as is the extra ability to crop in further.

Glass wise, i have the 10-20, Tamron 17-50 2.8 and 100-400L (considering going 300mm F4 IS)

Not sure on what the micro adjust feature does so i'll have a read up about that :)
