My sister-in-law is having a 21st birthday party and has asked me to taking picture throughout the night.

I have a flash gun, tripod and a remote, any thing else I need or any tips anyone has would be great,.

Unless you want to be stuck in one out of the way place forget the tripod.
 
Leave the tripod! Bounce the flash off the ceiling, jobs a good'un! Won't even need fast glass...set your camera up to something like 1/100, f5.6, ISO400 and let the flash do the rest :)

Presuming the ceilings are low and bright enough!

Yep..something for people to trip over ;)

I'm not sure what's planned for the evening, but if someone had a tripod at my 21st, they'd probably be locked up for manslaughter now, or at the very least..with a hefty fine from the H&S police!
 
Reconsidered yet:)

Your camera has IS built in so your 18-70 should be fine hand held with and without flash
 
a 6x4 piece of photo paper or something folded in two and an elastic band
I think the results are better than some pro defusers
..or buy a defuser

My flash gun has a defuser on already but my attempt making a couple as I have seen some in a magazine I just bought
