24-105 sticky aperture blades

My 24-105 has developed sticky aperture blades over the weekend.

I know one other guy personally that his has happened to, and a quick google shows that this is fairly common with this lens.

Not sure what causes it though, and if there is anything that can be done to reduce the risk?
 
It sometimes only takes a small spec to cause the blades to stick Dave. The common attempted fix is to select f/22 in AV mode and then repeatedly toggle the DoF preview button to see if it can be shaken free.

Hmm. I have it all packaged up ready to send off for repair. I shall give that a go now before I send it. Thanks!
 
No joy.

It works at any aperture when the focal length is set between 24 - 35ish mm. But zoomed in anyfurther than that and it isn't working. Ho hum. :(
 
Ah....if it's FL dependent then it's possibly the result of a fractured ribbon cable. In the post it goes then.

Yep. Will send it off today along with a 1dmk2 with a dead shutter. This might sting a bit. :lol:
 
Little update. The aperture assembly has been replaced, but they also picked up on the IS system being very noisy at times, oftern when moving the camera left to right. So that's also being swapped out for a new one.

Could have bought a new one instead of all this. :lol:
 
Looking on the bright side Dave, you'll be back where you started before it broke :thinking:

I'm not too fussed. Once it's back it will have any dodgy componanets replaced, it will be warrantied and I soundn't have anything to worry about for a long time to come. Touch wood.
 
How much did that cost you ? Sounds like an expensive fix . I was looking at getting one of these but may have to reconsider if this is a common fault .
 
I think it's working out to around £100 for the aperture and £100 for the IS.

I wouldn't let it put me off, sure I have found a few reports of the apertures sticking, but there are a LOT of copies of this lens in circulation.

Absolutely. It's easy to overlook that fact. People see three or four reports of a problem on the internet and they think it's "common", whereas in fact it might only affect 0.01% of the lenses.
 
Just me been paranoid , still on my list then .
